I was fortunate enough to meet this man through my boyfriend Steve McAlpin. We had a very similar situation that I felt very comfortable talking to him about. I know this brought us closer. He was a very special man and will be sadly missed. He touched the hearts of many. My prayers go out to his family.

My sincere condolences to Bob's family. I know Bob from Osher--especially the Memoirs classes which I have shared with him for a number of terms. He was a great guy and an excellent writer. I was constantly amazed at how active, vigorous, alert and involved he was with everything going on around him. I knew he was 95 years old but he was so vigorous that his death was still a shock to me. I apologize for not attending the Mass this Friday but I believe that because of the pandemic--not only for my sake but for the sake of all others attending--it would be imprudent. I'm pretty confident that Bob would agree with this reasoning. Gene Clifford

My deepest condolences to Bob's family who welcomed me as an honorary Whelan. Your dad was the consummate storyteller, mentor, philosopher, and travel buddy. I will miss him greatly. Godspeed brother and best friend.

I had the pleasure to have Bob as a graduate assistant while he was completing his doctoral degree at the University at Buffalo. Spent enjoyable time with Jean and Bob during his studies. Sorry to say we lost contact as his career moved on in Vocational Education. Bob was always a gentleman and scholar. His was a life well lived and he will be missed by his family and friends. May he rest with his wife and Lord.
