ALAN BYINGTON Obituary

ALAN MARSH BYINGTON - BURLINGTON - Alan Marsh Byington, 77, passed away on Feb. 1, 2015, in the presence of his loving family. He was born in St. Johnsbury in July 1937, the first son and third child of Marsh M. and Julia (King) Byington. Alan was raised on a dairy farm on Route 7 in Charlotte. He attended Charlotte Elementary, Mount Herman Academy, and graduated from Burlington High School. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and after an honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from the University of Vermont with a BS in finance. While there, he was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity. After graduation, he married Jeannette Woods and he began his lifelong career as a stockbroker, retiring from Morgan Stanley where he was known by fellow brokers as "Big Daddy." Alan, "Big Daddy," was a proud Vermonter who loved history, a plus member of the 251 Club and was for many years the treasurer of the Burlington Chess Club, playing a weekly game. Alan loved his trips to Las Vegas and his poker games with friends. After retirement, Al and Jan traveled to all 48 lower states in their 17' Roadtrek camper. He also audited several classes at UVM and enjoyed season hockey tickets. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jeannette; daughters, Kay Emily Byington of Agawam, Mass., Ann King Byington of Queens, N.Y., and Beth Woods Byington of Barrington, N.H.; three grandchildren, Isabella, Julia and Weston Alemany of Queens, N.Y.; and sister, Laura Kreutzer of Massachusetts. Alan was a kind and gentle man and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Graveside services will be held this spring. Should you want to remember Alan, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 300 Cornerstone Drive, Suite 128, Williston, VT 05495, www.alz.org; or a charity of one's choice.

I am very sorry to read of Al's passing. I have wonderful memories of the times we had while at UVM and subsequent visits. Al was a friend, and good poker player, who I was fortunate to have known. Thoughts and prayers to Jan and his "kids".

Al is truly missed. He was a mainstay in the chess club for years. Fun to play, fun to visit with, a genuine well met fellow. And honest too. Al saved me quite a bit of money with his sound advice. A wonderful guy.

I am shocked to read of Alan's passing. UVM hockey games just won't be the same without my seat friend. In the short time that I have known Alan and his wife I always looked forward to seeing them and chatting at the games. He will be missed by my hockey group. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

I am sorry for your loss Jan & famliy. Whether he was at the UVM hockey game in his leather bomber jacket, or at the office in suspenders and tie, he was always good for a high five and telling a good joke. His years of experience and his art of storytelling are missed every day at Morgan Stanley. Hopefully he has found himself a comfortable seat at a lucky craps table and is "hitting it the hard way".
"See you on the Quad" ...Big Daddy.

I am so sad to hear of cousin Alan's passing. Jan, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Alan had such a great sense of humor. He and dad, Horace, are probably swapping stories now. May you find peace and comfort as you remember the good times. Sending our love.

To "Big Daddy's" family. May you remember the best of times always and sympathy from me and my family on your loss.
Al was a joy to have as a work friend for many years and added much wry humor often when needed most. He will be missed! Bob Eddy

I remember Alan well from high school, a key member of the Class of '56's "Charlotte Mafia." He was always good-natured and well-liked. Condolences to Alan's family.
