I just came across this news while I was looking for old shipmates from the USS Camden. I was a helicopter pilot aboard for a WestPac cruise in 1979-80 and when I wasn't flying I'd hang out with Dave in the ship's "radio station" and spin discs for the crew. The "studio" had the best ac on the ship so it was a nice break from heat in the Indian Ocean. Dave was truly funny and quick - we had a lot of fun. I'm saddened to learn of his passing - would have liked to talk with him again all these years later. He made that cruise a lot more bearable (for a lot of us) and I can imagine the positive effect he had on others after his Navy days. RIP and my deepest condolences to his family - he was a great shipmate. Lt Steve sends.

I want to extend my sympathy to Dave's family. What a fine man he was. I knew Dave for the 17 years I worked at Northlands Job Corps in Vergennes. He was a bright light to all he came in contact with. The students were lucky to have him on their side. I loved to see him coming as you knew he would make you smile. It was a while ago for sure but I never forgot him and his contributions.

I was so very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I had the pleasure of working with him for a number of years as collaborating colleagues working with at risk youth in
Chittenden County. I was always immensely impressed with Dave's commitment to his clients, work ethic, and sense of humor. His passing is a loss to many youth and many of us who have had the pleasure of working with him. I will miss Dave greatly and I would like to say to all of his loved ones that you are all in my thoughts. Please know that Dave was greatly admired and cared about. I wish you all my very best at this very difficult time.

My sincere condolences to your family and to all who loved Dave. I was always pleased when I found that Dave was assigned to be probation officer for any of my clients. I knew he would be fair and treat them with respect. I knew that if they had a chance of success at all, it would be with Dave. He was a positive force and made a tremendous impact on many, many people.
Dave left us way too soon; I will miss him greatly.

Suzanne and family I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. Dave hired me many years ago as a counselor at Job Corps. I was fresh out of college and embarking on my first adult job. Dave had me laughing from day one. He told stories of his son who he referred to as "mini me", his family trips to FL, and his wife. After he left Job Corps I learned he was at the Dept. of Corrections and sharing an office with my best friend and college roommate Liz. We spoke maybe a week ago over the fence (VDOL and DOC are seperated by a fence) he was preparing for his night shift and needed to get his gear on...Dave was a great mentor, an unforgettable co-worker, and he will be missed so very much.

Suzanne and family, I was shocked and saddened greatly hearing of Dave's passing. We used to share Navy stories at many of the K of C meetings. There were always some good ones too. I am proud to have worked at St.Ann's with Dave on many occasions. Also, was pleased to see he was one of the folks involved with getting the Lone Sailor placed at the Reserve Center waterfront. May Jesus Christ have mercy on his soul. I will miss Dave.

I was saddened and stunned to learn of Dave's passing. We worked together for a lot of years at Burlington Probation and Parole and he was one of a kind. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a wealth of knowledge of 70's & 80's music, and a great love for really terrible coffee. Always upbeat and positive, Dave felt exceptional compassion and showed tremendous patience for everyone he interacted with. To say he will be missed does not convey the loss that those who knew him are feeling.

To Suzanne and David, please know that Dave truly changed the lives of many of the young men he worked with. I pray that you both will find the peace and strength to carry you through these tough times.

Dave...the guy who always had my back, believed in the work that we did together, and genuinely believed that everyone deserved a second chance. Thank you Dave for everything. I am a better person for having known you. Suzanne, Katina, David and family I am so very sorry for your loss. Your husband/dad touched so many lives, mine is just one of the many!

September 17, 2012

To David's family,
I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I was fortunate to have worked with Dave in The Chittenden drug court and had the chance to get to know him during training for the program.
God put Dave in the job where he belonged. Many of us actually remarked that some young people were lucky that they were in court because with Dave they had someone who could really help them change their life.
It is a great compliment to both his skill and his character that everyone looked for him for help, advice and support: co-workers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, parents, police, counselors and judges. You really could not finish a conversation with Dave without feeling better. We will miss him greatly.

Dave you were one of a kind. Professionally you helped me get two of the positions I have occupied in the last five years and personally you helped me to understand that kind of youth worker I wanted to be. The world may never know what you did for those kids, but they will know.

When I moved to VT, 5 years ago, Dave and I shared a case together. He was the p.o. I was the therapist. Since then, we shared quite a few cases. He was a wonderful p.o. to the youth he served. His even temperament was extraordinary and I enjoyed his collaboration and humor. His passing is a huge loss for this community. I will always remember him and am grateful that our paths crossed.

When I first started working for DOC I was nervous and unsure my first few days and months. Dave introduced himself to me the first day. We talked about our common work with kids and about how we both lived in Milton. My second day of work…I was walking down the hall and Dave was walking towards me down the hall. He said “Hey, Miss. Dow” I said good morning and asked him to call me Christie. From that time on Dave always said hey or good morning or how are you doing. He always had a positive word and a smile on his face. Even the days that were hard Dave was there…maybe in the bathroom washing out his coffee pot or outside smoking. Dave was such a blessing to know. Thank you, Dave for the person you were and the true kindness you always shared….
My prayers are with his family and friends.
