DONALD PIPER Obituary

DONALD F. PIPER JR. - HUNTINGTON - Donald Franklyn Piper Jr. passed away at the age of 71 on May 29, 2014. A longtime resident of Huntington, Don was born in Laconia, N.H., where he grew up, spending every summer at a cabin built by his grandfather Piper on the shores of Lake Wicwas in Meredith, N.H. Don graduated from the University of Missouri, later earned an MA in counseling from St. Michael's College, as well as an associate's degree in accounting from Champlain College. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and following his move to Vermont, was employed by the State of Vermont, Eckerd's Wilderness Camp for Delinquent Boys in Benson, afterward moving to Professional Nurses, and lastly was in charge of accounts for Chittenden South School District for many years. Don loved his life in Vermont, which from the beginning of his life here he mirrored on the philosophy of one-time Vermonters, Helen and Scott Nearing, and in his early Vermont years there were always copies of their books to be found by his bedside. A caring and loving patriarch by nature, he was a true family man who always valued his time with all of his family. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; two sons, Adam of Burlington; and Joel and wife, Jessica, and their daughter, Simone, of Lansing, Mich.; mother, Doris of Concord, N.H.; and sisters, Deborah of Dover, N.H., and Jacquelyn of Sinking Springs, Pa. Don will be sorely missed by all and will be laid to rest both in the woods of his home in Huntington, as well as on the shores of his beloved Lake Wicwas. Donations in his memory may be made to the VT Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Shocked to hear of Don's death and very sad. I spent 2 years with Don in the Navy on the USS Sylvania (AFS-2), which was home-ported in Naples, Italy and was the main supply ship for the U.S. Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. We worked together in the Supply Office and spent many liberties together with our other friends, George Peller, Tony Hipp, and Jim Helfman. Don, along with Jim, were the "old men" of the group, and Don was always adding his wonderful and unusual insights into our adventures and situations. We knew he was about to expound another unique perspective to our discussions when he'd begin, "You know,...." Thankfully, I was able to keep up a wonderful friendship over the years thereafter and enjoyed visiting Don and Lyn at their 3 different homes around Burlington over the years. Don will be greatly missed - and that's an understatement. My best to Lyn, Joel, and Adam and Don's family.

Dear Carolyn, both you and Don are very special to Jacob and me. We've told the Piper Place story to friends and family time and time again. The cabin in the woods that you lovingly built with Don seems like a fantastic tale from a storybook to us, full of adventure. We are grateful for the time we spent with you both in your home and we will always think of Don as the warm-hearthearted woodsman who was so content and at peace with the life he forged for himself amid nature and alongside you, Carolyn. His obituary is warmly written and peaceful. It captures his spirit well. He will be sorely missed by all. During this difficult time, please remember that I am here for you. I'm so glad that I'll be able to give you some in-person hugs in just a few days. You're in our hearts and we are sending you lots of love. xoxo

Don was my best friend since 1966 when we met in the Navy and serviced together..... Married his sister, he married her roommate.... Our children are good friends
today thanks to years of family outings for over 30 years, organized
by Don. Many laughs .... many good times. We will always miss him.

I only met Don one time. He was both pleasant and soft spoken with me. That brief encounter had me comparing him with Robert Fulghum. A good, uncomplicated life. Carolyn, Adam and Joel, my heart goes out to you.
