Jean Hendry Axten, 86, died Friday, August 28, 2015 at her home in Bend. She was born in Flushing, New York on April 26, 1929 to James and Margaret Hendry.

Jean received her elementary and secondary education in Long Island, and went on to college at Adelphi University, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing, and later in life attaining her Master's degree. Jean's career in nursing spanned over 50 years, beginning in New York and ending at Central Vermont Medical Center in Barre, VT.

She loved to golf, garden, listen and sing along to music, was an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time with her family. She especially loved to bake her homemade coffee cakes and bring in to the staff at the hospital. She also had a special place in her heart for the pet schnauzers in her life.

Jean was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, her twin sister Joan Guyman and a brother James Hendry.

She is survived by her daughter, Christine Axten and her husband Scott MacDonald of Enfield, NH; her son Bruce Axten and his wife Shawn of Bend, OR; 3 grandchildren, Ethan and Danielle Axten of Bend, OR., Sierra MacDonald of Enfield, NH; a brother John Hendry and his wife Sam of Ashburn, VA., and several nieces and nephews.

Hello, My name is Sandy Spargo, and I worked at CVMC for many years. I am an RN, and although I worked on a different floor than Jean, we were good friends. I saw her countless times at work, and I can visualize Jean's warm smile and sparkling eyes, as I write this. She always stopped, would say something funny that made us both laugh, or chat for a moment. Jean always showed great interest in me and how my life was going, providing thoughtful and genuine insight and encouragement. She was such a kind person. Of the friends I had at CVMC ( I am recently retired), I will always be thankful for Jean's friendship, and will always remember our frequent, though brief conversations as special memories ! I am so sorry for your loss. Sincerely, Sandy Spargo RN
