Michael Burrage Obituary

Michael John Burrage

Alexandria, VA - Michael John Burrage, a former resident of Essex, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, May 26th. He was 50 years old. Mike was a beloved son, brother, uncle, and true friend who didn't have a mean bone in his body - he had a generous heart, was always willing to lend a hand and a board game.

He attended Clarkson University where he received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and later received his MBA from the University of Vermont. He was most recently employed as an Information Technology Specialist with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Mike was perhaps best known for asking "Why? There must be a reason for that…. I wonder what it is?"

He was driven to find the answer and enjoyed sharing those answers with others. Mike was the jovial Hobbit that everyone loved to be around. No matter what Michael was to you, there is no doubt you will think of him as you ponder your next question.

Michael is survived by his father, Peter Burrage and his companion Susan Hartman of South Burlington; sister Ann Burrage of Essex; niece Melanie Theriault (Josh Noel) of Medford, MA; nephew Austin Theriault (Jordan Walsh) of Essex; nephew Nathan Theriault (Emmalee Smith) of Essex; nephew Owen Theriault of Essex; cousin Peter Halloran of New York, NY; cousin Priscilla Halloran of Falls Church, VA; cousin Chuck Halloran of Bedford, MA; and longtime friend John Owens of Gainesville, Virginia. He is also survived by his former brother-in-law Patrick Theriault of Essex, along with many lifelong friends. Mike was predeceased by his mother, Priscilla Burrage, in 2009.

Michael, our world is a little less bright with your untimely passing, but you will never be forgotten among your family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Northern Virginia Burial and Cremation Society is in charge of arrangements.

Michael often taught me more in minutes about a subject than others could in hours, and he always made it interesting and fun. I think of him often when I have a problem to solve, and it helps every time. Glad for every moment he gave me, and I hope I can pay the gift of his kindness and friendship forward.

I worked with Michael for years, and shared an office at our first few months at USPTO. He was always a kind, patient person who was always willing to lend a helping a hand. He was extremely brilliant and was so inquisitive. My very deepest condolences.

I worked with Michael the last six years at USPTO. I'll remember most how friendly and kind he was when I started and all through out our time here together. I always appreciated his insight and help. He will be greatly missed.

Michael was astonishingly patient and kind whenever we needed help or advice. He was happy to explain exactly how he solved problems (and he made it look easy!), and then take time to teach us how to do the same. But far more important, he was willing to share meaningful moments that enriched our lives. My deepest condolences to his family.

While working together at the USPTO, Michael was an extremely kind, helpful, and knowledgeable colleague. I learned something from him each time we spoke, and I always appreciated his willingness to explain things in a way that made sense to me and would help me going forward. I'm very sorry to hear of Michael's passing.

Michael was one of the sweetest people I have ever known. I will never forget his inquisitive and generous nature and his love for tabletop games. I hope his family and friends can find peace in this very unfortunate time.
