I met Dick about a dozen years ago during my tenure as Chair of the Long Trail School Board. We quickly found common ground in our love of Vermont and American History, particular the American Revolution. He remains one of those unique historical writers combining meticulous research with the uncommon ability to tell a good story. Yet, The Borrowed Years is the one I love the most (a treasured hard cover it took me a year to track down.) I wish I had known him earlier. I would have been the richer for it. A wonderful man. My condolences to all who loved him. Chip Chamberlain

I had the privilege of knowing Dick years ago while working for him and Bill Blair at Country Journal Magazine, he was larger than life in my opinion, so intelligent, so kind and thoughtful. May God be with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
