WINSTON WAY Obituary

WINSTON ARTHUR WAY NORTH HERO - Winston Arthur Way, 89, of North Hero, passed away Jan. 26, 2013, after a long illness. He was born March 11, 1923, in Burlington, and grew up on the island of North Hero, where his family ran the Irving House - now the North Hero House. During his high school years, he commuted by train to Burlington and attended Burlington High School, where he graduated in 1940. Win served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in China, Burma and India. This experience made a lasting impression on his life. After returning home, he entered the Forestry Program at Syracuse University and received a B.S. degree in 1950. In 1951 he completed a masters degree in Agronomy at the University of Vermont and stayed on to become a teaching assistant. Winston became the Extension Agronomist for Vermont in 1951, a position he enjoyed until his retirement 32 years later. He is well-known locally for his television programs on WCAX's "Across The Fence". He also wrote numerous articles for magazines and publications and gave lectures to small towns throughout Vermont. Win loved his work and educating people. He was a member of the American Society of Agronomy and served on the Vermont Food Commission under Governor Salmon. As Vermont's extension agronomist, he supported traditional and organic agriculture. He was constantly learning and sharing his knowledge of food production and environmental issues. Winston retired to his family farm in North Hero, where his passion for gardening, writing and education continued. He always described himself as leading a "charmed and charming life". Win and his wife, Jane, also ran Aqua Vista Cabins, where they welcomed many people from all over the world. Their home was always open and they made wonderful friends over the years. Winston leaves his wife of 65 years, Jane (Ash) Way; a daughter, Linda Cantrell and her husband, Jim, of Westminster, Colo.; a son, Jon Way and wife, Chris, of Stow, Mass.; a son, Tom Way and wife, Aldona, of Winooski; a son, Kim Way and wife, Karen, of Dublin, Ohio; a cousin, Don Dodds and wife, Cheryl, of Barre; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the wonderful care Winston received at Fletcher Allen, including Dr. Steven Ades and staff at the Vermont Cancer Center, and also to the caring staff at Starr Farm Nursing Center. A celebration of life will be held in North Hero at a future date.

Dear Jane, a voice from the past. All these lovely notes written about Win are true, a lovely person who liked to talk and tell stories. You 4 Ladies on our Bike adventure made our day and many memories later Richard and myself are still dancing around the Piano, with our sombrero hats on. Win liked it,
Fondly, Christa

Win was a wonderful man at all points of view . He was bright, knowledgeable, dedicated, generous, friendly , helpful , active , rational very very interesting etc...He and Jane were certainly the main reason why we came to North Hero , year after year .We needed and enjoyed to see our friends every summer .Discussing with Win was learning a lot, explaining a problem was getting the solution... His (and Jane's )warm welcome, when arriving tired from Europe , was a balm after the roughness of passing through the border control. He and Jane, represent the good side of USA.We will miss him a lot and never forget him .

Dear Jane,
What a legacy, I loved his endless fascinating stories, the tours trough his vegetable gardens, sitting on his beloved tractor, your beautiful cottages,
He will.be missed, but his spirit will continue.
Love, your biker friend,
Christa

There are few over time who have had a significant impact on Vt agriculture as an extension educator and teacher, and Win was one of them.

I had the chance to meet Win twice in his very nice hometown North Hero VT. He was a wondeful host. It was so interesting to listen to his WW2-experiances and to see the great colored pictures he did of the Burma Road. I would like to express my deepest sympathiy to his family.

Jane and family,
Your loss is our loss, Win was a wonderful friend and colleague in Extension. Win was one of my early Extension heros, mentors and role models. He instilled upon me the desire to make the best, most interesting slide shows I could muster. He also impressed upon me the need for the largest screen I could carry around to meetings...I've always used no less than a 6' screen, and that is because of Win!
My heart goes out to you. He was one of a kind!

Mr. Way,
You had such an impact on my life! I lived for our family vacations at Aqua Vista. I have to admit I was always intimidated by your brilliance and amazing life experiences. I remember having dinner with you and Jane and my family one night. Everything on the table was fresh and delicious and the homegrown vegetables were the kicker. I loved your garden and taking long walks through the wildflower fields behind your house. The memories I have with you I will cherish forever. You will be missed. I love you

My wife Virginia and my four children met Win and Jane in 1985 when, late at night, we inquired about a room at the Aqua Vista Cabins. After asking us if we had any idea what time it was - I did, 8:30PM - Win spied our two month old daughter, Emily, and proceeded to show us a cabin, against his better judgement. We all fell in love with him that night.
A more sharing and generous man I have not met. Opinionated and sure of himself, Win shared his slides, writings, and treasured photos and mementos with us every year when we vacationed at Aqua Vista. He also shared his vegetables, tractors, Adirondack Touring boat, and after a long day, his ice cream.
North Hero, Vermont and the world are a sadder place today without Win. He was loved and we miss him already.
God Bless his wonderful family, some of whom we have met, and know that we envy you for having had Win as your blessed Great-grandfather, grandfather, father and husband for all these years. Our prayers are with you all.

If I had to guess, I would say that at this very minute, God is sitting in rapt attention as Win tells him how to rotate the crops in the gardens of heaven.

Win will always be remembered fondly by the Varney family. The poem that he wrote when my father, Ken, retired is framed and up on our wall. Down from goose hunting in the Islands is in my favorite sleeping bag. When I plant soldier beans, I remember where they originated. I have so many fond memories. Please accept our wishes of peace and comfort.

So sorry Jane for your loss--actually the towns loss since Win was the historian of all that had happened in North Hero since the beginning and he was most anxious to share it with anyone who wouldlisten or who was looking for any tidbit that was not general knowledge. I will miss seeing him at all North Hero events and taking care of Aqua Vista right up until his last year... If you need anything Jane please just let me know..It was a pleasure knowing him...He always mentioned the ride in my Old Rolls Royce whenever I saw him...
