Gary Vann

1954 - 2024

Marvin Gary Vann, 70, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at Heart Hospital of Austin. He was born on January 18, 1954, in Burnet, Texas to Marvin Henry Vann and Ila Christine Manning Vann.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Lampasas on Friday, August 9, 2024 2pm with visitation an hour prior. Burial followed at Naruna Cemetery in Burnet County.

Gary and his brothers grew up on the Vann Ranch in Burnet County along the Colorado River where he was a 4th generation rancher. There they raised beef cattle and Angora Goats. In his youth, Gary was a member of 4-H and the FFA showing commercial show steers locally as well as throughout the state. He graduated from Lampasas High School in 1972. After high school, Gary attended Tarleton State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture Education and became a member of the Rifle Team. After college, Gary began his career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Glen Rose, Texas. Shortly afterward Gary accepted a position with Farmers Home Administration in Nacogdoches, Texas, beginning his long-term banking career. Later, Gary would transfer to the San Saba Office returning him home to the Vann Ranch.

In 1981, Gary was hired to become the Vice-President of United Peoples Bank later establishing the Lampasas Branch of First State Bank of Burnet. Gary would spend the next 20 years serving the community of Lampasas specializing in Farm and Ranch lending. After his banking career, Gary went to work for Camber Corporation where he traveled the world repairing small arms and optics for the United States Department of Defense.

In 1977, Gary married Jan Whitis in Lampasas, Texas. They were happily married for 47 years. Gary was a member of the Lampasas Kiwanis Club, First Street Church of Christ, Sons of Confederate Veterans-Camp 578, The National Rifle Association, and a Director of the Lampasas County Livestock Association. He was an avid outdoorsman always looking for an opportunity to go hunting and fishing. Gary also had a deep love for family genealogy and history. If you knew Gary, you knew that he loved the Civil War and was thrilled to find that his Great-Great-Grandfather, Jordan Fleming Crews was a Captain in the Georgia Calvary for the Confederate States of America.

Gary is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, John and Jewel Vann, his maternal grandparents, Cortis and Dera Manning, and his father, Marvin Henry Vann.

Gary is survived by his spouse, Jan Vann of Lampasas; his sons, Kyle Vann and Reese Vann (Anissa Vann and Easton Hurst) of Lampasas; his brothers, Robby Vann (Leigh Vann) and Danny Vann (Amy Vann); his grandchildren, Reagan Vann and Sutton Vann and his mother, Christine Vann along with various cousins, nieces and nephews.
