Dear Shields,

When my family became friends with yours it was the first step to John and I being stronger in our faith. The friendship between my dad and Chuck, opened the doors for my brother to our youth group, Summer’s Best, and many more great memories. He will definitely be missed, but know that it’s all part of God’s plan. We were lucky to have you in our back yard for so many years!

Oh my dear Connie and kids,
I truly feel so deeply for your terrible loss. To me Chuck was a "true cowboy" with his slow deep drawal and calm cool nature. When I first heard the terrible news my first thought was, "Thank God they are christians. God will help them to go through the unimaginable pain of letting Chuck go." I remember Connie when you told me an angel watched over you and saved your life, and I believe that angel is watching over you and the kids now. I am so very very sorry.
Our family will always cherish the good memories of your family. Chuck found John first and they really had a special friendship from then on. His loss will touch so many for the rest of time.

I will pray for you and the kids.

Connie, Ted and I want to send our sincere condolences to you and your family. We were cleaning out closets and came across pictures of Chuck and you; Herb and Ellen; and Hank and Rita from the good old days of our youth and time we spent at the Hotel Saxonburg. Seems like yesterday. Again we are very sorry for your loss. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. Ted and Dana Haas.

Not real sure how me and Brundage managed to find/hookup with Chuck & Micki (Farrell) freshman year at Wesleyan, but you can be sure Chuck's sense of humor had a LOT to do with it. I remember him taking me for a ride on his Triumph (bike), late one night, and him yelling over his shoulder, "How fast you think we're going?". Don't worry doc, it's our little secret...I'll never tell! He sure could make me laugh...not sure I ever saw him serious. Not real sure any of us were ever "serious", those 4 years at Wesleyan. There's nothing wrong with that though, is there, doc? God bless you doc.

Chuck was a good friend in college. We shared many a fun time. He was a very generous person and overall nice guy.

My heart goes out to his family to have lost him so young.

I will never forget Chuck. He and I were best friends through junior high and part of high school. We shared a lot of growing up experiences back in Deer Creek. I had hoped to go out West to see him sometime, perhaps when I retired as well. My condolences to the Shields family. He was a great guy! As clumsy as these words may be, I want to share a bit and offer my deepest sympathy on the loss of Chuck, this news was hard to take. He was a lifetime friend. He was a DEAR man and friend of mine from high school thru college and beyond. We were buddies and shared rides back and forth from college to home. I will never forget meeting Connie and how VERY happy he was to find his lifetime mate and love. He was so proud of her and his family. His sense of humor was so unique and we shared many laughs for many years. My deepest sympathys to the whole Shields family. May comfort come from the memories of the times they shared together.

I have never met a more devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend in one person. That was Charlie. I am sure there are better people in this world but you would have a very difficult time finding them. Charlie meant so much to me through college and for all of these years after. I will always smile when I think of him. I will miss him like the brother I never had.
