George Davidson Obituary

George Maxwell Davidson, Jr.
Age 96, of North Canton, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014. He was born in West Lafayette, Ohio, a son of the late George Maxwell and Dora (Brothers) Davidson, Sr., and had been a Canton resident most of his life. George was a 1936 graduate of McKinley High School and also a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University. He attended the University of Michigan Law School, and graduated from Case-Western Reserve Law School. He established a successful Law Practice in downtown Canton in 1949, retiring in 1990. George had served as a Canton City Councilman in Ward 11, Canton City Solicitor, Canton Police Prosecutor, and as a member of the Civil Service Commission of Ohio. His memberships included the Toastmasters, Onion Club, Canton Lions Club, the Canton Club, American Legion Post #44, a 65 year member of Canton Lodge #60, F. & A.M., the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Canton, Canton Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow recipient, Oakwood Country Club, Canton Retired Executives, and the Stark County and Ohio Bar Associations. He currently was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church and their Men's Bible Study. He previously was a long-time member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder, Sunday school teacher, and led many special committees, including the Calvary Building Committee. He was a long-time volunteer for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Stark and Carroll Counties, for which he received the Golden Hammer Award. George served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. George will be remembered for his quick wit and words of encouragement, which he freely offered until his last day. He was kind and patient. He was an avid reader and intellectual, always curious and wanting to learn more. He applied his organizational skills and his compassion when he started the Scali Scholarship Fund and when he served as an arbitrator on many occasions. With his never ending enthusiasm and energy we expected him to live forever. He continued to inspire those around him daily, especially in the later years. His family will miss his positive attitude and great love.
Survived by his wife, Virginia 'Ginnie' (Shattuck) Davidson, with whom he celebrated their 67th Wedding Anniversary on June 21, 2014; two daughters, Ann Davidson-Pohl and her children, Betsy and Michael, all of Sarasota, Fla., and Beth Davidson and her daughters, Erin and Alix Sullivan, all of Canton; also one brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Marge Davidson, of Tallahassee, Fla.
A Celebration of the life of George Maxwell Davidson, Jr. will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at 11 a.m. in Christ Presbyterian Church with Rev. David L. de Vries officiating, followed by a luncheon in the church Fellowship Hall. Friends may call Wednesday, 6-8 p.m. in the CHURCH PARLOR. A private entombment will be held in North lawn Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George's memory may be made to Christ Presbyterian Church, 530 W. Tuscarawas St., Canton, OH 44702, or the John Scali Scholarship Fund c/o Canton Student Loan Foundation 4974 Higbee Ave. NW, Canton, OH 44718. Ginny, Ann, and Beth, We wish you peace during this difficult time. George was refreshing, funny, and a joy to be with. Even when he wasn't feeling his best the last few weeks he didn't miss an opportunity to joke. Asking: "How did the market do today" or "What time is school"? He was a wonderful man with a gentle and kind disposition. I will miss him after 50 years of having him be a second Dad. He will be watching over all of us along with our family in heaven. My love to all of you.

What a sweet man. I will miss him dearly. I've only ever known George with his Ginny. Now I know Ginny without her George.

We love you, and are available if you need anything Ginny.

Hello. I rented a duplex from Mr. Davidson about ten years ago. He was the kindest soul knowing I was coming out of a divorce and needed a place to call home for my son and myself. To his family, know that he touched my life by his generosity.
