Richard Gerwin Obituary
Richard F. "Rick" Gerwin Jr., age 64, of Canton, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 surrounded by his family. He served his country in the U.S. Army and the City of Canton for 11 years as a Police Officer. Rick retired from McKinley High School where he taught criminal justice and was owner of New Baltimore Homemade Ice Cream. He also enjoyed working the local fairs as the "peanut man". Preceded in death by his son, Scott Gerwin. Survived by his wife of 45 years, Tana (Keiser) Gerwin; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Sven Van Bulck; grandson, Ty; brothers, Thomas (Jean) Gerwin, and Greg Gerwin; sister, Cathy (Gary) Sherwood; nieces and nephews; his brother-in-law, Terry (Chris) Keiser; and mother and father-in-law, Dean and Neva Keiser. Calling hours will be Sunday from 2-6 p.m. A brief service will be held at 4 p.m. and calling hours will resume until 6 p.m. Burial will be private in Sunset Hills Burial Park.

I am so sad to see this. After graduation I would look forward to seeing Mr. Gerwin every year at the fair. Mr. Gerwin was one of the best teachers I had in school. He taught us as much about life as he did law. I still quote many things he said told us during class. He would be proud to know how his words of encouragement helped mold this young woman. He may not be with us but his thoughts and ideas will be passed on.

I am so sorry to see him gone. He was'nt my teacher unfortantly he retired the year before I was a senior. We all loved him though and respected him like no other. I want to express my deepest sympothy to his family. He was a wonderful man that will be truely missed.

When David Wright informed me, my knees went limp, my heart sank. I am sure your reaction was much deeper felt. Even though I haven't seen him in years, he still is in my heart. I love Tricky Ricky Mr. Gerwin. There is no man that compares to the heart and the personality of our mentor and instructor who helped make our HS days bearable and rewarding. I am grateful that he was a part of my life. Thank you for sharing him with us. May God keep you and bless you through this time.

We are very sorry to hear of your loss! Going to the ice cream shop after Brett beats me in putt-putt will never be the same, Rick was always one to make you chuckle even when he shouldn't have been at the shop. He was a great man as you know who has touched so many for so many different reasons. He and Scott will get to spend Christmas together and be able to look upon your family together once again. Ricky and I have been friends since 4th grade, and I consider him one of the most dynamic and true persons I have had as part of my life. He was a "rock", and in love with you for so long. We are so sorry for your loss. I hope you know that our family, as well as many others whose children worked at New Baltimore, are grieving with you. There are no words to convey how special Rick was to our daughter,Nicole. He always treated her as if she were his daughter too!!! I don't know of any other employer who greeted his workers with a hug at the beginning of the season and hugged them good bye at the end of it too! I know he dried many a tear, set some boys/boyfriends straight and gave advice to struggling teenagers. It just doesn't do him justice to say that he was a wonderful man, he was so much more than that!!!!!! God bless him! I know he has blessed us in just letting our family know Rick. Know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Gerwin was a fantastic teacher. He was more than that. He was a friend, someone who listened and cared about people.I often thought of him through the years and had the pleasure of running into him at the ice cream shop and the fair numerous times. Even though I graduated in 1983 and was in his class, he knew me when I would see him. He will be missed but will always be remembered by me beacuse of who he was. He was a treasure and I had the privledge of knowing him. God bless you in your time of sorrow.
