Dr. William C. Moffitt

1932 - 2022

Dr. William C. Moffitt was born in Akron, Ohio to Mary Frances Becker and James Patrick Moffitt July 14, 1932. His boyhood was spent in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. He attended St. Joseph's Elementary School and frequented the Gorge. He enjoyed its rustic landscape. He was accepted at Campion, a Jesuit High School in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. He graduated in 1950, attended Kent State for his pre dental work and Ohio State University Dental School where he received his DDS. He married Patricia Myer Moffitt in 1956, was one of the three men to receive the U.S. Navy Hospital Probation Assignment and became an Ensign in the U.S. Navy for being and outstanding student at OSU. He served in the Navy for 26 years achieving the rank of Captain. He was one of the first to serve on the USS America (CVA-66) air craft carrier and designed the Dental Department. He served in Japan for three years and was the Periodontist for the Seventh Fleet when he was only a LTJG. After he retired from the Navy, he taught at the Dental School in Baltimore, Maryland, the oldest Dental School in the world. He was regarded as an excellent teacher and awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus. Many of his students kept in touch with him and revered him to the end of his days. Although there were no children, he was considered a father figure and mentor to many young men and women. He was a loving and devoted husband. He died peacefully in the arms of his beloved Patricia on October 12, 2022. In lieu of flowers, gifts in honor of Dr. William Moffitt should be directed to the Periodontics Post Graduate Fund at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. The inurnment will follow immediately after at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, 1122 Sunrise Beach Rd Crownsville, MD 21032.
