Herbert D. Bigham Jr.

Herbert Daniel Bigham, Jr. "Cap'n Danny", a retired pleasure boat captain, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2023, at home after a lingering illness. He was 88 years old. Born in Rome, GA he moved with his family to south GA, while he was a young child where he attended Funston Elementary School and Moultrie High School. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Navy "to see the world." He served four years of active duty, spending most of his Navel career on the USS Megara. He was very proud of his Navel service and veteran status. He met his future wife while home on leave from the Navy and they married shortly before his completion of active duty. Soon thereafter the couple moved to Maryland where they settled and spent the next 58 years in the West River area of the Chesapeake Bay. Cap'n Danny's love of the water extended beyond his Navel career and he soon became involved in boating. In the 1960's he embarked on a long career as a pleasure boat captain cruising between Annapolis and South Florida. He ended his career after enjoying many happy years as captain of the yacht "Puddin' Head." When not on the water, Cap'n Danny embraced his farm-boy heart, spending time in his garden and tinkering with, and rebuilding old farm tractors. Cap'n Danny is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irma, two sons, Frank Bigham of Florida and Mark Bigham of Maryland, two grandsons Andy Bigham and Todd Bigham, and three great-grandchildren, Darrien, Westley, and Mae. Friends are invited to a celebration of life for Cap'n Danny at 2 PM on Saturday, September 23 at the Galesville Hall in Galesville, MD.
