Jon Lowe Obituary

Dr. Jon Bishop Lowe of Edgewater, MD passed away peacefully on January 23, 2021 at the age of 76, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born on January 21, 1945 in Portsmouth, Virginia to Robert Gayle Lowe and Lois Carol Willis Lowe. He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years Mary Beth Lowe; his three children from his first marriage, Maggie (wife Beth) of Port Orchard, WA, Stephen (wife Liza) of Spofford, New Hampshire, and Emily Zack (husband Thomas) of Göteborg, Sweden; his two sisters, Terri Lowe Beard of Portsmouth, VA and Wendy Lowe Malvin of Newport News, VA ; and three grandchildren, Hazael, Julia, and Carter. He was lovingly adored by many nieces and nephews. Jon was a graduate of Randolph-Macon College and the Medical College of Virginia/Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He served in the Navy for nine years, completing a four-year residency at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA. After being stationed at the Naval Hospital in Annapolis, MD, Jon began a 40-year career in Internal Medicine. He opened his practice in Annapolis, where he warmly served his community, serving as President of the Medical Staff at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Jon was the longest tenured physician at Pathways Treatment Center, serving 25 years, and he also worked for Righttime Medical Care. Jon was warm, kind, caring, and a wonderful listener. He lovingly made house calls to his homebound patients, and he volunteered with medical missions to Guatemala through the Episcopal Church. Jon raced International 14s locally and internationally, and he loved to go fishing. He enjoyed summer trips to Maine with his wife where he would position his chair to face the ocean and read a good book. (His favorite book was The Poisonwood Bible.) He adored his many dogs and enjoyed watching Morning Joe and Rachel Maddow. We look forward to gathering to celebrate Jon's life later in the year, when it is safe for all to get together. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Arundellodge.org, the Parkinson's Foundation, or Hospice of the Chesapeake.

Sorry to hear Jon passed. A rather special human being. Was just thinking of him, and the expression "Light hearted and yet a man of great honor. But without the oft accompanying stick up his bum that some with "honor " seem to carry came to mind
I loved Jon. He was a fun poker buddy. A sweet friend and caring physician of great integrity . Blessings and light to you my friend on your journey forward Thanks for being in my life. You will be missed

Jon and I were thrown together by virtue of the alphbetical assignment of lab partners etc, ay MCV. It was one of many lucky circumstances for me at school. We became friends, and spent time together at the cottage he rented near the river. All my memories of Jon are positive, and losing track of one another after graduation was a loss, at least to me.

Jon has been a part of my life since I was 11 years old. When we moved to Maryland my mom did not want to find a pediatrician and after meeting me he said agreed to be my doctor so long as my mom agreed to take me to the health department for my vaccinations. He always made time for me, even as a teen, to listen deeply and completely, sometimes holding me when I cried, staring me in the eye when he knew I knew I was wrong, and always reminding me what I was capable of regardless of what life had dealt me.

Jon is one of the reasons I became a health provider, and one of the main reasons I became a PA and not an MD, for which I am ever grateful. He took me on as his first PA trainee from AACC as a personal favor and to this day when I see a patient a part of him walks into that room with me. My prayer everyday is that I can use my mind, hands, heart in Jesus’s name to heal as he asks and to remember to have the patience, kindness, and intelligence of practice that Jon Lowe did.

Thank you for all you gave to me. You will be missed.

Dr. Lowe was one of the best men I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He cared for his patients with all of his heart, and was without a doubt the best listener. You could walk into a full waiting room, and he would care/treat you as if he had all the time in the world for you. Rest in peace, Dr. Lowe - you will be so greatly missed.

Warm, kind, caring listener, yes! The best physician I ever had.
I watched his illness take him from his work. I hope he had time to enjoy is home and retirement. Truly the world has lost a piece of it's beauty

Dr. Lowe was my PCP from the time I was a little girl until my late teens. He at times was like a father figure to me and helped me with more then just average medical care. He was a wonderful man and I can't tell you how sad I am to hear the news that he is gone. Everyone should be so lucky to have a man like him in your life. It was an honor to know him. Rest in peace Dr. Lowe and my condolences go out to his family, patients and all who loved him❤❤❤

Dr. Lowe served as my personal physician for more than 30 years. He took the time to hear what I had to say and to answer my questions. His approach to treatment was always measured; never over-reactive. After an office visit, he always had time to chat for a few minutes about family and other topics. He treated me as a friend as well as a patient. He was a good man; a life well lived. My prayers and sympathy to his family.

I was so fortunate to have worked with Dr. Lowe for several years at urgent care but also work at his private practice for seven years. Dr. Lowe was always kind and compassionate which gained him the utmost respect by his patients, colleagues and friends. I consider myself privileged to have worked with Dr. Lowe for so many years and witness his love for and dedication to medicine. His knowledge in the field was endless. When we lost Dr. Lowe we all lost a special friend, a doctor to so many and a person with a uniqueness that can never be duplicated. You truly will be missed.

Dr. Lowe was. It only a great doctor but he was a wonderful friend. He was companionate and patient as well.
He diagnosed my husband’s cancer and told him what to expect before he went to the oncologist. It was like Dr. Lowe had a sixth sense when it came to his patients.
He even made house calls when necessary. There will never be another one like him, and he will be missed by many. My husband, Jim, and I are blessed that he came into our lives. May he rest in peace. Louise and Jim Halley

Dr. Lowe was a kind and knowledgeable doctor. I considered him a friend as well as my physician. I was sorry to read of his passing.

Jack always came home from his doctor's visits with Dr. Lowe and told me about his kind manner, his willingness to spend time, and his friendly dog. They always caught up to each other on the two Emilys (his and ours) since they were classmates at AHS. Peace and comfort to all of you in his family.

It was a pleasure racing International 14s with Jon. He was a good sailor, doctor and a great friend. His kindness to us when Geri's mother came to spend her last few years with us will never be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas.
