Martin Deafenbaugh Obituary

Dr. Martin Keith Deafenbaugh, CAPT(Ret.) MC USN, 74, of Annapolis, MD, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025. Born in Norfolk, VA on December 19, 1950, he is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Lydia Deafenbaugh.

He is survived by his beautiful, loving wife, Cathy Stephens Deafenbaugh; his beloved children, Dr. Jaime Deafenbaugh Dunn and her husband Robb of Annapolis, Dr. Bradley Deafenbaugh and his wife Meredith of Virginia Beach, and his cherished sister, Kandis Arrington and her husband Sam of Virginia Beach. He was the incredibly proud "Papa" to his grandchildren Nora Dunn, Kate Dunn, Emilia Deafenbaugh, and Luke Deafenbaugh. He was also best friends with dogs Rory, Walter and Gracie, whom he loved to slip table scraps to when their parents weren't looking.

Marty was a graduate of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, class of 1969, and graduated in 1973 from the United States Naval Academy. He married the love of his life and wife of 51 years, Cathy, in Ashland, Virginia on November 24, 1973. A surface warfare officer for 7 years after commissioning, he served three sea tours and had returned back to USNA as a Seamanship and Navigation Instructor when he was accepted to medical school. He graduated from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, class of 1984, and upon graduation, completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP). Shortly after graduation, he deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Storm. He practiced at NMCP for the next 10 years, serving as Chief of Orthopaedics and the Residency Program Director, as well as a team surgeon for Naval Special Warfare. He then returned to USNA as their Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Brigade Medical Officer. He completed his 32-year Naval career as Chief of Orthopaedics at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda, leading the Orthopaedic department as Bethesda became the primary casualty receiving hospital for Sailors and Marines wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he continued in private practice for the next 10 years in Noblesville, Indiana and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. He then retired with Cathy to Annapolis.

Marty was a lifelong fan of Navy football, Motown music, Stoic philosophy, and gin martinis. He perpetually rooted for the underdog and never made it through the National Anthem or Navy's Alma Mater without shedding a tear. He was a passionate fisherman, a keen amateur historian and a sentimental collector of old, beat-up, run-down cars, a hobby that his family never really understood but nonetheless tolerated with love. Two of his favorite places were the Double-T Diner in Annapolis, MD, and the front porch of the family beach house he built in Kitty Hawk, NC. It was there you could find him laughing with and entertaining his family and friends that he cherished above all else. He always remarked how incredibly lucky and grateful he was to have so many friends that he loved. He lived by and was the embodiment of the great class of '73's motto, "Non Sibi."

Please join us in celebrating Marty's life on Friday, May 2, at 3pm at the USNA Chapel, with a reception to follow. One of Marty's favorite organizations was the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons (SOMOS). As a prior past president, he believed strongly in its mission of educating and training military surgeons to take care of our nation's wounded servicemembers. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to SOMOS (https://www.somos.org/friends-of-somos). These donations will go towards training the next generation of surgeons who answer the call.

Cathy and family,
I just found out reading Shipmate tonight (June 2, 2025) that Marty had passed. He and his roommate Curt Root were my youngsters when I was a plebe at the Naval Academy. I chased him to USUHS and graduated in 86 and remember how nice Marty always was to me and anyone he encountered. What a gentleman and friend. I am so sorry for your loss. I pray that God comforts you and your whole family during this difficult time.

When Marty started at the Naval Academy he could not have a car. Les and I lived in Laurel Md
At the time. So we let Marty keep his car at our apartment, so when the time came to go home, he just needed to go to Laurel & get his car.
Marty is also my cousin.
Kandi, and family, I am just finding out about Marty today.
May 24, 2025, I am so sorry that I didn´t know that he was right here in Maryland. We live in Ellicott City,MD now.
Hugs to you and the family.
You have my email.

Cathy!
So sorry to learn of Marty´s passing
My prayers go out for you and the family during this time of transition...God will guide you and lead you through troubled waters if you will lean on him in this time of need...

I remember talking with Marty at a Presidents Club reception in the Sups garden party some years ago...same time I got a picture with Roger Staubach! We had a great conversation, ate some wonderful food and caught up on the many years since our graduation in 1973!
We´ve been praying for Marty for many years during his many challenges with health issues and now look forward to reuniting with him in heaven where we will spend eternity together

God bless you and keep you as you adjust to your new life without Marty by your side each day...you will surely learn to rely on family and friends for support...love you "sister"

I remember Marty as an incredibly kind, thoughtful classmate who exemplified the ideal of Service--to his country and to people. I had a severe cervical disc issue in mid-career that Marty treated and it literally changed my life. Fair winds and following seas, my friend. You are missed!

Brothers and Sisters, All of the memories and condolences expressed herein, are ample first-hand eye-witness testimonies to Marty's exceptional, superb human character. Marty was a beloved husband, father, grand-father, USNA '73 Classmate, career Naval Officer, Medical Doctor, Orthopedic Specialist Extraordinaire, and at least one more...Navy Football Teammate. Marty and I met on the Navy Plebe Football Team and in the Spring of 1970, as Plebes, we had the honor of manning a Varsity Third Team Offense against the First Team Defense in a Game Scrimmage at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. With Marty at the critical Right Tackle position, we drove the ball from South to North, unstopped, 80 yards to a score and extra point. I will never forget Marty's infectious intensity on the field and in the huddle. He gave us all the courage and inspiration to accomplish the seemingly impossible. He anchored the right side of our line. Throughout our lives, it was always a pleasure to cross paths with Marty (and Cathy). He was, and still is, a beloved Brother, Classmate, Teammate, and Shipmate of mine and countless others. I am certainly looking forward to our inevitable, next crossing of paths...our next huddling up together to continue moving the ball up the field. Fraternal love to all.

Marty was one of the finest men we have ever had the honor to know.
We not only got to know him as a client in fixing up their Noblesville Indiana home, but got to experience his orthopedic mastery & his kindness in fixing up Dan on a Sunday, bringing in his staff on a weekend. So many wonderful dinners out with Marty & Cathy with drinks on their sleeping porch beforehand. We missed them so much, but understood that their wonderful family was always their first priority. He will be missed by the love of his life, Cathy, his children, Brad & Jamie, his grandchildren and his forever naval family.
May you rest in the arms of the angels, Marty. With love, Dan & Patty Mac Innis

For those attending the memorial service, parking can be difficult on the grounds of the Academy. The reception to follow will take place at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, in the N* Room (East side of stadium). For convenience, buses will be provided for transportation from the stadium to the USNA Chapel and back. Attendees can park their vehicles at the stadium free of charge and take the buses to the chapel. The buses will return to the stadium / reception area immediately after the service. It is recommended that those who wish to utilize the bus shuttle drive at the stadium at 1:30pm to allow for plenty of time in case the bus service requires multiple trips back and forth to USNA. The reception at the stadium will immediately follow the service and conclude at 6:30pm. For any specific questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Brad Deafenbaugh (757-675-6877) or Jaime Deafenbaugh Dunn (443-822-4446). Thank you!

Marty was one class senior to me for the 2 years we were together in 19th Company, USNA. I followed Marty to serve on USS Fairfax County (LST-1193) where we shared a stateroom. For a brief period we served with 2 other 19th CO brothers, Wes Schmidt and Bob Morris, seen in the photo.

Marty was an exemplary model of service during his Navy career both as a skilled surface warfare officer, educator and orthopaedic surgeon. All the while displaying one of the most genuinely kind, humorous. gentlemanly personalities. I have been truly blessed to have known Marty and Cathy for 50 years.

I will miss our phone calls, correspondence, and seeing Marty during visits to Annapolis. And I will never forget our stateroom duets belting out the words to "Rescue Me", by Fontella Bass

Becky and I send our heartfelt condolences to Cathy, Brad, Jaime, Kandi, and all your families.

I am so very sorry to see the loss of Marty. He was only 2 years older than me but I always felt he was much older. I also see that we married on the same day in `74. We were third cousins. My father was Phil Newton, Marty´s mother´s first cousin. Again, so very sorry to see of his passing. Prayers for all his beautiful family.

Oh, Kathy, when I saw Marty´s obituary I was heartbroken. Bud and I often reflected how much we enjoyed being with you and Marty when we lived in Charleston. Marty was the life of the party and I remember you all like yesterday. Marty always had a twinkle in his eye which made me giggle. Those were such fond memories of our early Navy days. Prayers of comfort to you and your precious family.

I´m so sad to hear of Marty´s passing. I remember our fun Naval Academy days when he and Kathy were dating. (Kathy and I went to Longwood together.) At one point, Marty came to my classroom to explain how those F-14s flew, because they were always flying over our playground. He had a warm, fun- loving personality. Even though it´s been years since I´ve seen him and Kathy, it´s been a blessing to keep up with them on Facebook and see their beautiful family. My condolences to you all.

Marty and I were great friends at Bayside High. When we were trying to make up our minds about going to the Naval Academy, we camped out at Nags Head for a weekend to surf and figure things out. I ended up talking him into going with me and he never let me forget it!
I´m going to miss you brother.

Marty was my private tutor for a few engineering courses. There are no doubts that without the extra hours of tutoring that Marty administered to me, I never would have graduated. There are classmates and there are heroes, Marty will always be both to me. Non Sibi was not a saying but a way of life for him. Until next time, Classmate.

Marty and I went to Bayside High School together but lost track since then. I am so sorry for his loss but loved reading what a wonderful life he has had. An incredible legacy that has made such a difference in so many lives. In high school Marty was always well respected. With his light going out the world will be a bit dimmer. God bless you all that were able to enjoy him all these years.

So many incredible memories fishing in Kitty Hawk and the Chesapeake Bay with Marty, Brad and my dad. I'm feel so lucky that my dad and Marty bought the Parker when Brad and I were at an age to create core memories that last a lifetime. I will never forget Marty's kindness, support or sense of humor...or his ability to catch a fish on the pier when nothing was biting.
