Steven Smith Obituary

Steven Joseph Smith, a 67-year old resident of Edgewater, MD, died on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Born on August 19, 1953 in Cleveland, OH to the late Martha Shirley and Melvin Wilmer Smith, Steve and his family lived in Holland from 1958 to 61, where his father was the supervising engineer in charge of designing and building an experimental nuclear reactor for the Dutch government. It is now used to produce radioactive elements for the medical industry. As a boy, Steve was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed swimming in the South River. He graduated summa cum laude from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1975 and traveled around the US, oftentimes just by himself on his motorcycle. He was self-employed and worked as a residential/commercial painter and sold a variety of items in various venues throughout the years including firewood he chopped himself, jewelry boxes he bought in Taiwan, items he gathered at flea markets and online and sheds he built himself. He enjoyed having conversations with everyone; was an avid storyteller, loved learning about outer space and was a believer in UFOs. The saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure" was a motto he lived by. He loved to volunteer as coach on his son's basketball and baseball teams and he enjoyed playing badminton at the South County Senior Center and playing ping pong at the Annapolis Senior Center. Steve loved to read and watch movies and was facile in different languages. He craved the simple life and enjoyed wildlife and nature. He had a heart of gold when it came to his family and friends. Steve was a devoted father to his two children and a proud Pop-Pop to his three grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Stephanie Jo Spadaro and Thomas Joseph Weitzel-Smith both of Edgewater, MD; his siblings, Michael W. Smith of Millersville, MD and Nancy B. Smith of Towson, MD; his three grandchildren, Ellie Jo, Laila Marie and James Paul Spadaro and his loving girlfriend, Judith Meyers. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Steve's life at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd, Edgewater, MD on Saturday, July 17 from 10 am to 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made by planting a memorial tree in memory of Steve by going to A Living Tribute's website (alivingtribute.org) 500 West Putnam Ave., Ste. 400, Greenwich, CT 06830 and/or donating to the Chesapeake Conservancy, 716 Giddings Ave., Ste. 42, Annapolis, MD 21401 (chesapeakeconservancy.org). Steve was one of a kind, and a good friend in the 1990's. I knew him from the Edgewater flea market, which he ran for years. He adored his children, and I wish them the best.
