Zohrab Marashlian Obituary

MARASHLIAN, ZOHRAB BEDROS, 66, of Fairhaven in Tracy's Landing, died on March 11th in Friendship, MD. He was born April 25, 1944 in Aleppo, Syria to an Armenian family.

He was awarded a degree in civil engineering from The American University of Beirut, and he immigrated to the United States in 1971. He later earned an MBA from Columbia University. Zohrab was a top scholarship student, excelling in mathematics and engineering. Soon after arrival in America he was employed by Perini Construction, a major U.S. and international general contractor, where he rose from office engineer to President of the Civil Division. In his 35-year career, he oversaw construction of bridges, tunnels, water treatment plants, and many other large projects. He was known and respected throughout the industry for his integrity, expertise and hard work.

In 1975 he and Darlene Bauer married in St. Illuminator's Armenian Apostolic church in New York, and they raised two children, Bedros (Peter) and Laura, in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. He was also like a father to his Armenian-American nieces, nephews, their children and friends. He was energetic, warm, generous and humorous to all around him, and tried to help those in need. He did not refuse a request for assistance. In retirement in Maryland since 2007, he was busy with woodworking, building, fishing, taking courses and volunteering for Partners in Care.

Zohrab is survived by his wife Darlene, son Peter, daughter Laura and her husband Myles Thurlow, his sister Sosi Karamanougian, niece Mania Arabatlian and husband Loutfi and children Kevork and Nanor, nephew Harout Karamanougian and wife Maggie and children, niece Sevan Dertadian, husband Hrair and children. He was predeceased by his brother Zareh and his parents.

A celebration of life will be held in April. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to SOAR (Society for Orphaned Armenian Relief), 1060 1st Av, Suite 400, King of Prussia, PA 19406, www.soar-us.org or Partners in Care, 6 S. Ritchie Hwy, Pasadena, MD 21122, www.partnersincare.org.

I Just found out yesterday about Zohrab’s passing and am totally in shock.
I first met Zohrab around 1980 when we had a project for miscellaneous steel in Brooklyn for the third NYC water tunnel. He was the project manager for his company for that phase of work.
I went to central park to meet him at the project trailer. While waiting for him I believe three workers came to me and asked what to do next. I had no clue what they were talking about. It turns out they thought I was him we could easily have been brothers.
I continued to work with him on many projects in the 1980’s.
We worked well together. I last saw in late 2006 just before he retired when our company got the Tappan Zee bridge project from him.
We hugged as old friends that hadn’t seen each other for many years.
As I am writing this tears are coming from my eyes.
The one thing that always stood out to me was that when he gave his word he kept is. He was a man of integrity that I always trusted.
I feel great sorrow for his family and friends.
Zohrab I will always remember you until I join you.

Zohrab was one of the most special men I ever met in my life, He had his own way of showing how sincere and caring he really was. He certainly didn't look for recognition for what he did , but you knew he cared by what he did for you ! He is certainly one of the reasons I have what I have today and also the person that I have become ! God Bless You ! RIP
