Janet Gail (Altig) McAtee, age 84, of Greenview, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at the Springfield Suites in Springfield, Illinois.
She was born on March 10, 1940 in Oakford, Illinois, the daughter of Clark & Wilna (Ishmael) Altig.
Janet married Donald E. McAtee on January 28, 1962 in Greenview at the Greenview Presbyterian Church.
Mourning her passing are her husband, Donald; children, Donna (husband Daniel) Edwards of Greenview, IL, Martin (wife Kelly) McAtee of Greenview, and Deanna (husband Kevin) Waldeck of Waggoner, IL; grandchildren, Gregory (wife Courtney) Edwards of Petersburg, IL, Alyssa (husband Brad) Tucker of Mason City, IL, Jared (husband Rob) Edwards of Phoenix, AZ, and Kyle (wife Faith) Waldeck of Farmersville, IL; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Janet is preceded in death by her parents, Clark and Wilna Altig; older sister, Twila Dowell; and younger brother, Clark UJ Altig.
She graduated from Greenview High School in 1958.
After graduating from high school, she enlisted into the U.S. Navy. She served for the U.S. Navy from 1958 until 1961, where she had served as a Hospital Corpsman.
Janet worked at the Williamsville School District as the Lunch Lady. She also worked as a Home Health Aide for Menard County Health Department. She also was employed by St. John’s Hospital in Springfield in the surgery department and business office. Janet retired from St. John’s in 2007 after many years of service. During retirement she continued to volunteer at St. John’s for several more years.
She was a member of the Greenview AMVETS, American Legion, and DAR. Janet also volunteered for Menard County Basic Life Support as an EMT.
Throughout her life, Janet loved her fish pond, flower gardens, sewing, swimming, celebrating Thanksgiving with her family, traveling to Florida in the winter, and especially spending time with her family and friends.
Visitation for Janet will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at Mott & Henning Funeral Home in Athens. Funeral services will also be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Charlotte Poetschner officiating.
Burial will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Greenview immediately after the services.
