Glenn Whiteman Obituary

Glenn Edward Whiteman, age 90, of Sykesville, MD passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at Copper Ridge, Sykesville, MD. He was born on October 12, 1934, in Cumberland, MD to the late Raymond Whiteman and Marion (Garlitz) Whiteman. He was a loving husband to Eva Arlane Schroyer Whiteman whom he married on September 3, 1961. Glenn and his family moved to Sykesville in the 1950's. He grew up between his parents homes in Sykesville and Flintstone, MD. Glenn was a life member of Sykesville Freedom-District Fire Department where he and his entire family have been active since the 1950's, serving as an ambulance driver, working the carnival and just about any fundraiser the department had. Glenn met his wife Eva while an affiliate for nurses training for psyche training education. Through an incident at Spingfield Hospital where Eva was injured, she met Glenn when he arrived with the ambulance and transported her back to Cumberland Hospital . This started a long term friendship which ultimately led to their marriage in 1961, at St. Paul's Church, Accident, MD. Glenn worked at Springfield Hospital Center for 31 years in Rehab. He then retired and went to work at Evergreen Motors, Frederick for 10 years and drove a bus for Irene Johnson for 20 years for the Carroll County Public School System. In 1978, Glenn received The Optimist Award, Friend of Youth. He helped coach softball and basketball. He was the 2001-2002 Optimist Award Citizen of the Year by the Knights of Columbus and Archbishop Fulton Sheen. In the 1950's Glenn set bowling pins at Sykesville Main Street. He served in the US Army as an SP4 from 1957-59. From their union they had three children Debra Benkert and husband the late Michael Benkert, Valerie Hoffman and husband Ronald Hoffman, Jr. and Timothy Whiteman and former wife Tamara; grandchildren Jennifer Schepker (Austin), Sean Benkert (Tiffany), Brandi Lynn McNerney and husband Connor, Ryan Whiteman and Alex Whiteman and great-grandchildren: James, Jeremy, Jordan, Stella, Aspen, Violet and Dean. He is also survived by sisters Nancy Worthley and Joanne Cross; brother in law Calvin Bloom. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Glenn was predeceased by siblings, Eugene Whiteman and wife Patricia and Sharon Bloom and Kay Donnelly. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 PM on Friday, June 27, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, where a services will be held at 7pm, beginning with a memorial tribute from the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department followed by his Pastor, Rev. Christopher Guyer. A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM on Monday at St. Paul's Church, Accident, MD followed by a service at 11 AM. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Accident, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department or the Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department Auxiliary, Sykesville, MD 21784. Services are being handled in conjunction with Newman Funeral Homes, P.A.
