James O'Meara Obituary

James Edward O'Meara Jr., 90, of Glyndon, died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at home.

Born Dec. 22, 1921, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late James Edward O'Meara Sr. and Dorathea Schwamb O'Meara. He was the husband of Mary Hartman O'Meara, his wife of 70 years.

He had lived in Glyndon for 58 years.

He graduated from Calvert Hall College in 1940 and Maryland Institute in 1948. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in the Philippines.

He founded the O'Meara Construction Company in 1952, which was located on Washington Avenue in Towson. His noted contracts were Eline Funeral Home, Baltimore Aircoil and numerous restaurants in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., area including Rusty Scuppers, Wendy's, Burger King, Gino's and Friendly's. Among his numerous awards were the Craftsman Award from the Baltimore Congress and Exchange for his work at the Inner Harbor, and the Peabody Prize and the Class of 1948 Medal from the Maryland Institute.

He was a longtime member in the John Birch Society and also was a communicant at the Basilica of the Assumption in Baltimore. He was past president of the Reisterstown Owings Mills Glyndon Chamber of Commerce in 1960. He liked playing guitar and reading, and especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law Kathleen O'Meara Farley, of Homeland, Theresa Ann and Stephen Prevosto, of Hampstead, Susan Marie and Allen Wroe, of Glyndon, and Mary Bridget and Leonard J. Witt, of Westminster; sons and daughters-in-law Daniel J. O'Meara, and Kevin J. and Nancy O'Meara, all of Glyndon, James P. and Marianne O'Meara, of Finksburg, and Michael E. and Jacqie O'Meara, of Westminster; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the small chapel at Sacred Heart Church in Glyndon. Interment will be in Druid Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Carroll Hospice Dove House, 292 Stoner Ave., Westminster, MD 21157.
