Jerry Dean Whitlock

Jerry D. Whitlock, 85, of Sykesville, MD passed away on November 11, 2017 at the Dove House of Carroll Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7225 Slacks Rd, Marriottsville, Maryland. A viewing will be held that morning from 9:30 - 11:00 for family and friends. Interment will follow at the Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 9501 Catoctin Mountain Highway in Frederick, Maryland. Jerry was born in Worland, Wyoming, the youngest son of Andrew and Ludina Whitlock. While his brothers and other young men from Worland were defending the country during World War II, Jerry took on a number of odd jobs around town. He started driving a truck at the age of nine - delivering milk before school - where he had to stand up to have a foot on the gas pedal and still be able to see out the windshield. At 11-years-old, he had his first accident on a wintery morning delivering linens for the local laundry. After high school, he went to visit his older brother in Washington, DC and never left. A beautiful young lady with a British accent had caught his eyes, ears, and heart. Jerry married Irene Bailey in the Salt Lake Temple on March 11, 1953. Just ten days after the wedding, the United States Army sent Jerry to Japan for the Korean War. Irene was finally able to join him 11 months later when the war ended. He finished his three-year enlistment as a Sergeant and returned home to Washington, DC to finish college. He graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Business which led to a long and distinguished career in the banking industry. He was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many leadership callings. He loved teaching the Gospel because he learned as he studied and prepared. His greatest joy, however, was serving in the Washington D.C. Temple for over 30 years. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Irene. He is survived by his brother, Gene (Charlotte); four children, Jeffrey (Annette), Kenneth (Lilian), Brian (Kelly), Tricia Gadberry (Brent); 13 grandchildren and their spouses; nine great-grandchildren; and, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His wife and family knew they were deeply loved by him and he cherished each moment or phone call with each of them. He especially loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and gave his all to share and bless the lives of others.
