John Athman Obituary

John Joseph Athman, Sr. of Westminster, Maryland, passed away peacefully at Golden Crest Assisted Living on Wednesday, March 19, 2025. John was born in Baltimore on July 27, 1934 to Henry J. and Margaret Sterner Athman. He graduated from The Mount in Baltimore in 1952, and shortly thereafter began his 37-year employment with what is now Verizon. He then worked several years with another telecommunications provider, before finishing his career as the office manager for Cutting Edge Machining, a family-owned business. John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Josie Barclay Athman, his son, Michael David Athmann and his wife Shonna, his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Athman, and five "daughters by choice," Beth Gazella, Ana de la Macorra, Nina Mosti, Janet Sprinkle, and Jessica Wigfield. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. He was predeceased by two of his sons, John J. Athman, Jr. and Casey Shane Athman, and his sister, Margaret Athman Kus. John was a member of the Westminster Elks Lodge for many years, and a faithful congregant of St. John's RC Church. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father, a loyal friend, a generous and "persistent" host, and a man of immense faith. Interment will be private, and a Celebration of life will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St John's RC Church in Westminster or to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
