John Hahn Obituary



John Henry Hahn, Sr., age 87, of Finksburg, Maryland, formerly of Taneytown, died on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at his home. Born May 8, 1927 in New York, N.Y., he was the son of the late Albert and Wilhelmina (Herdtfelder) Hahn. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine R. (Tapman) Hahn. John was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the amphibious unit transporting U.S. Marines onto Pacific Theater beaches. He served on many ships most notably the U.S.S. Missoula at the battle for Iwo Jima. He worked for Bethlehem Steel Plant at Sparrows Point as a machinist for 44 years retiring in 1989. He always enjoyed the yearly retiree cookouts and gatherings. He was a member of the V.F.W. Littlestown, American Legion Taneytown, Fraternal Order of Eagles Littlestown (past president), and attended Piney Creek Church of the Brethren in Taneytown. He enjoyed working outdoors, mowing grass, working on John Deere tractors, old cars, and motorcycles. Surviving in addition to his wife are son, John Hahn, Jr. and companion Pratoom Capone of Darlington, Md.; daughters, Donna L. Haberkam and husband Bernard of Dundalk, Claudette L. Birchett and companion Maxwell Major of Dundalk; grandchildren, Jennica Rodrigez-Kincer and husband Gregory, Ryan Neff and wife Shannon, John H. Hahn, III and wife Melissa, Mandy Hahn and husband Brad Willis; great-grandchildren, Corey, Carson, John IV, Lea, and Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Edwin, Robert, and Albert Hahn; and sisters, Dorothy Higgins, and Catherine Steigelman. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 15, 2014 from 3-5 p.m. and 7 p.m. until the time of service at 8 p.m. at the Myers-Durboraw Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster with Rev. Stanley Diehl officiating. Inurnment with military honors will be private in Garrison Forest Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Owings Mills. Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675.
