Paul Vietz Obituary

Paul F. Vietz, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., of Westminster, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at his home surrounded by his family. Born October 14, 1931 in Berlin, Germany, he was the son of Fritz and Hildegard (Pietsch) Vietz. His mother passed at an early age from complications of endometriosis. This was the inspiration to pursue a career in medicine specifically obstetrics and gynecology. His father was drafted into war and did not return. As an orphan in war torn Germany, being an outstanding student he was awarded the opportunity to spend a year at Bard College in New York as an exchange student in the early 1950's. Opportunity to " hitch hike" allowed travel all the way to the West Coast, leading to a fascination and understanding of American culture. He returned to Germany to complete medical school in Berlin. Paul married his high school sweetheart, Sigrid. Their honeymoon trip was to the United States for residency training in OB/GYN. Advanced training lead him to Baltimore MD with ultimately establishing a practice in OB/GYN in Westminster MD. Always the innovator and wanting to provide the latest treatments for his patients, he turned his interests to the new field of minimally invasive surgery as it is known today. Study and collaboration with Professor Kurt Semm "Father of Pelviscopy" in Kiel, Germany brought world wide first techniques to Carroll Hospital including a minimally invasive hysterectomy technique C*I*S*H, published in medical journals. Mentoring and teaching minimally invasive GYN surgery across the United States and the world became a passion. Offers to join institutions from all over the world were declined. He loved his patients in Carroll County and remained dedicated to them and his community. Providing compassionate care and loving his profession into his late 80's. He leaves behind his loving wife, Sigrid; son Michael and daughter in law Brittany; grandchildren; daughter Martina Saboury and son in law Rod. All of Germany: sister Anita Augustin, sister in law Monika Jackisch, niece Sabine Martin, nephew Frank Jackisch and cousin Walter Schueler. "Be a good boy" were the last words of his father to him and the guiding light of his life. The family will welcome friends on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7pm at Pritts Funeral Home and Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with a funeral service beginning at 7pm. For those unable to attend the service, it will be livestreamed. Please visit www.prittsfuneralhome.com and choose the livestream link on the homepage. The livestream will begin just prior to the start of the service. Interment will be private. My heart is so sad.
Dr Vietz was one person I literally trusted with my life. He delivered 3 of my four kids, in fact in when he delivered my 4th child in Dec 1986, he said to me "Mrs. Langkam, "I won´t be delivering babies anymore, to which my response was, "well if you´re not delivering any more, I´m not having any more." We both help up our end of the bargain. He also did a few other surgeries for me, including the C.I.S.H. He wasn´t one to let the insurance companies tell him how to care for his patients in the hospital either, If he felt you needed to stay longer, you stayed longer. He was the most compassionate, educational, professional and down-to-earth Dr anyone could ask for. . I always looked forward to seeing him and Mrs Vietz, in the office, and I enjoyed our chats about health and life in general. An excellent Doctor and a very Interesting person to talk too. I was Blessed to have known him as my Doctor, and I also called him my friend since 1975. I´m honored to know him and saddened to lose him. God Bless the Vietz families and thank you for sharing
"Doctor Vietz" for so many years.

He delivered my three kids. No one could understand why I came to Westminster from Hanover for the deliveries but I thought he was the best. It was a pleasure to know both him and his wife. My sympathy to the family.

Dr. Vietz was my one and only G.Y.N. I was so lucky to have him as my doctor. I had difficulty getting pregnant.
Dr. Vietz put me on the temperature chart and did testing etc. At that time you did the Rabbit Test. I did the test and was notified I was not pregnant. I went to
Dr. Vietz and he said" I don't care what the test says you are pregnant." He was right. I had a healthy baby boy. I don't know who was more proud to show him off
Dr. Vietz or my husband.
Dr. Vietz and Mrs. Vietz were a pleasure to be around.
He was such a great doctor. There will never be another doctor like him.
He will truly be missed.
Condolences to the family

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. Vietz was truly a Carroll County icon. He had such great talents that save many women. These talents were passed to Dr. Mike Vietz who delivered 3 of my children. He saved the life of my last child by coming back to St. Agnes Hospital after he was already gone home. Thank you for all you have done for women gyn problems. I extend my condolences and sympathies to the entire Vietz family and treasure your talents.

Dr. Vietz brought me into the world, and helped see my father out of it. Dear Mrs. Vietz, Michael, and Tina, I send you all love and fond remembrance of summer barbecues and more. I'm so glad I had the chance to see and talk with him a few years back. All my best to you, always, and, Dr. Vietz, sleep well.

I had the honor to work with Dr. Vietz professionally for many years. He was instrumental in teaching laparoscopic techniques to our hospital doctors and traveled to teach others. He genuinely cared for his patients and took excellent care of them. Dr. Vietz was always a gentleman and devoted to his family. My prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

I have known Dr. Vietz the majority of my life. From being a student nurse in the mid 1970's to when he delivered two of my three children. As a student nurse, Dr. Vietz was always kind, informative and always willing to teach us. That never changed after graduating and becoming one of his patients. He was always kind, considerate, caring and most of all very professional. I will always remember being in the hospital, and him having to restart my IV. It was the first one he had ever started. I felt honored as he did it with such compassion. Even though he didn't deliver my third child, he did visit me and sat with me, holding my hand,as the baby had a few complications. RIP Dr. Vietz. You will be sadly missed. Fly high with the angels.
Sincerely,
Kathleen (Boczek) Watson

Dr. Vietz was definitely "one of a kind"!
I've never had a doctor like him. My first meeting with him was as my Mother's doctor. My brother and I were with Mom before her surgery at CC hospital. Dr. Vietz came in the the room to talk to Mom before her surgery to explain what he was going to do. He also talked to my brother & I and put all of us at ease. He said to Mom," I am going to take good care of you." and he sure did.
He visited her every morning while she was in the hospital.
Mom told him that I didn't have a gyn doctor and then he said I could come to him.
I was his patient for many years and always enjoyed visiting with Mrs. Vietz, too!
God bless his family and may he rest in peace...

Dr. Vietz delivered my first child and also performed an emergency surgery on me years later. I remember being in the hospital after my first child and him "visiting" me on a Sunday evening. He just came in a suit, sat down and we had a nice long visit. He was interested in my future plans for the baby and I; what a sweet memory he gave me.

Dr. Vietz delivered all three of my children. He was kind, caring and dedicated to his patients and Mrs. Vietz was just as professional! They were a perfect team. We were so thrilled when they came to our daughter´s 16th birthday party. They were like family to us. Dr. Vietz also acted quickly, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35, to get me to another great Carroll County oncology dr. I always felt like I was in good trusty hands with dr. Vietz and Carroll County Hospital was blessed to have him on staff for so many years! He was the best!
Our sympathy goes out to the family for comfort and strength as they mourn his death. He will be missed. God Bless.

Dear Sigrid, Michael and Tina,
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this tribute in honor of your husband/dad. What I am about to say is something you already know!
Dr. Paul Vietz, my physician/friend, was a wonderful man with a strong constitution and dedicated his life to helping others. We, my daughter and I, had absolute trust in him! You always knew he had your best interest first and foremost. Paul (Dr. Vietz) had integrity, was caring, compassionate, admired, intelligent and devoted to his profession. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched not only in Carroll County, but throughout the world. There was never any doubt that he truly loved medicine and his practice. He was truly blessed with many talents!
May God grant you a peace that passes all understanding throughout this difficult time and please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

With sincere sympathy, friendship and love,
Carolyn Whitney

I became a patient of Dr. Vietz in 1969 when I was pregnant with my first child. He delivered all three of my children. He, as well as my primary care doctor Joseph Caricife in Union Bridge Maryland as well as Mrs. Vietz were the best doctors anyone could ever have and they really cared about their patients. Dr. Vietz performed a couple of surgeries on me with great success. He would come into my room at the hospital and spend half hour to an hour just talking in the middle of the night. Several years ago one of my children had a problem and the doctor she was going to thought it was all in her imagination. I suggested she get a second opinion from Dr. Vietz. She did so and he diagnosed the problem within a matter of minutes. He did not participate with her insurance company he told her not to worry, he would find her a Doctor Who did. The same day he had her an appointment with someone else. Surgery was scheduled and Dr. Vietz was at the hospital that day. He went into the OR to see how things were going. When she was back in her room later that night he went into talk to her about the procedure and What a good job he thought the surgeon had done and that he was sure she would be just fine.
One day when I was in his office he shared with me his displeasure with an Insurance company because he had a patient who needed two procedures that could be done all at one time. However, the insurance company wanted it done at two different times. He said that was stupid and he did not want to put his lady through two surgeries. So, on his day off he drove to Baltimore to have it out with the insurance company. How many doctors these days would go that extra mile? After Dr. Vietz left the office I had an issue that I was concerned about so I called his son Michael at Saint Agnes. Spoke to the secretary and she told him I was a patient of his dads. Later that evening he called me and spent a half an hour with me on the phone. Apparently he is just like his dad. I was blessed to have them in my life. Rest in peace Dr. Vietz you will be missed

Dr. Vietz delivered both of my children. I moved away and returned some 20 years later. He helped me through menopause and continued to be my gyn into my senior years. He was a most caring, compassionate, skilled and innovative physician. May God welcome him home embraced by all the love his patients have felt for him through the years.

Dr Vietz delivered our 4th & last child almost 38 years ago. Though I had some concerns about my age, he never failed to remind me that I was " young & healthy " at each visit. That constant encouragement settled my anxieties and led to my deep respect and trust of him. Intelligent & knowledgeable, while still managing to be warm and engaging , he displayed a wonderful bedside manner. I'm grateful for his excellent care. His was a life well-lived. My prayers for comfort for all his loved ones.

I met Dr Vietz in 1963 when I had a miscarriage when I happened to be in Westminster. When I moved here in 1969 I became his patient and always looked forward to my conversations with him after my exam. He loved to talk about innovations in gynecology and was good at putting the information in lay terms that made it very interesting. He performed two procedures on me and made sure I understood everything about them. I had total confidence in him and he always exceeded expectations. I will miss him and his lovely wife whom I always had lovely conversations with during my annual appointment.
