Sonya Welsh Obituary

Sonya Rae Triplett Welsh passed away at home on Monday, March 21, 2022. Sonya and her twin sister Sandra Mae were born as fifth and sixth children to parents Myrtha and Ernest Triplett in Glyndon, Maryland on January 11, 1939. Their elder siblings were Ernest Earl, Eleanor, Marian and William Triplett. Not long after the twins were born, their mother Myrtha passed away, and the twins were sent to live with different families. Sonya went to live with the Kagle family (parents Alice and Jesse), where she grew up with siblings Jesse Jr., Robert (Bob) and Elizabeth (Betty) on a farm in Glyndon, and then later in Upperco, Maryland. Sandra went to live with the Brown (Edith and Joe) family, with sister Louise. Sonya was a 1956 graduate of Franklin High School in Reisterstown Maryland, and was known for her musical talent, singing Alto in "The Crazy Trio" with fellow students Joyce Fowble and Phyllis Cockey. Shortly after graduation, Sonya went to work at the Prudential Insurance Company. During this time she met and fell in love with Walter David Welsh, and the two were married in June 1959. Sonya became an accomplished homemaker and mother to children Kevin, Kelly and Sherry, delighting her children with music, engaging their minds with books, cultivating their hearts with Bible readings and lessons, and opening their eyes to Earth's beauty with walks in the woods to pick water cress and raspberries. Sonya is survived by her husband Walter (Gus), children Kevin, Kelly Sweatman, and Sherry Welsh Burns; son-in-law Alan Sweatman, M.D.; grandchildren Molly, Hannah and PFC Henry Burns; and her sister and brother in law Elizabeth (Betty) and Ernie Herrera of Bakersfield, California. A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2022 from 10 am – 2 pm at the ECKHARDT FUNERAL CHAPEL, P.A., 11605 Reisterstown Road, Owings Mills, MD 21117. Interment will be private. A donation will be made in person to The Doorways in Richmond, VA in Sonnie's name. The Doorways serves as a hospitality house for patients, family/friends/caregivers and has relationships with hospitals not only in the state but accommodates those in need who've been referred from elsewhere for treatment at VCU. The Doorways never turns anyone away regardless of their ability to pay and provides meals and other services to their guests. Sonnie's generous nature and love of others will definitely be appreciated by those who need it as they are "between home and healing."

Sonnie's love and precious friendship will always be remembered and cherished by me. She will forever remain in my heart and I am privileged enough to have had her in my life in many capacities. She treated me as a bonus daughter, she was a protective confidant, a generous soul whose warmth, love and compassion had no bounds. The lights of Broadway should be dimmed in her honor because a true star has temporarily gone dim. Our mourning is only for a brief moment, her smile will brighten up the skies once more in paradise. Thank you to the family for generously sharing such a beautiful gift with those of us who were made richer by her love and friendship. My loving thoughts and prayers are with the family. May the peace of God comfort you both now and in the difficult days ahead. It's my sincerest hope that beautiful memories will illuminate your darkest moments and overshadow your tears.
