Yvonne Zimpfer Obituary

VINTON: Yvonne Morene (Holst) Zimpfer, age 62, passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics following a long and courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 9, 2024, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton with Tyler Henkle officiating. The family will greet friends from 2:00 until 6:00 PM, Sunday, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Especially For You of Mercy cancer fund, Gifts of Hope or Pink Heals.

Yvonne was born on January 8, 1962, in Britt, IA, the daughter of Leonard and Doris (Rath) Holst. Yvonne graduated from Washington High School in Vinton, with the class of 1980. During high school, Yvonne worked for Moose Madorin, doing books. Due to her petite size, Moose trained her to do light body work on the underside of the cars in the shop. She furthered her education at Kirkwood Community College, graduating with a degree in accounting. On September, 20, 1980, she was united in marriage to Rick Zimpfer, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church. Yvonne did books for the Viking Sewing Center and worked in the accounting department at Life Investors. She often rode the elevator at Life Investors with former governor Robert Ray on her way to the office. In 1985, Yvonne and Rick purchased the Red Lantern in Vinton, and shortly thereafter, they renamed it to the Ron Da Voo. Yvonne was an accomplished pool player and played in women's leagues for over 30 years. She also served as president of the league. She was an avid flower gardener and enjoyed raising plants, indoors and outdoors. Yvonne and Rick were early supporters of ABATE of Iowa, and assisted district 5 with the beer tent at the Pop Corn City Cycle Circus. At the conclusion of the rodeo, Yvonne would jump on the back of Gary Luke's trike and the pair would do donuts across the infield. Yvonne was the president of the Especially For You Cancer Walk Team, and she coined the slogan "It's a boob thing" for the team.

Yvonne is survived by her husband Rick; mother Doris Holst of Vinton; sister, Yvette (Frank) Baker of Vinton; brother, Barry (Karen Ackman) Holst of Vinton; nephews, Shelby (Ashley)Baker of Vinton, Jared (Jannette) Baker of Cedar Rapids, Thad (Sarah Peterson) Dulin of Vinton, Logan Holst of Vinton; 5 great-nephews; and her great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her father Leonard; infant brother David; and her in-laws, Ed and Barb Zimpfer.

The family would like to thank Dr. Deborah Wilbur, Dr. Benjamin Jacobs, Nurse Will and Nurse Elizabeth for their loving care.
