Edith Johnson Obituary

Marie Johnson, 74, of Louisa, Virginia, and formerly of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away Sunday, September 30, 2018, at her home following a brief battle with cancer.
Born February 1, 1944, in Russellville, West Virginia, Marie was the daughter of the late Doyle G. Hinkle and Lilly Edith Hinkle (Short). She was the salutatorian of her graduating class at Crichton High School, and had recently celebrated by attending her high school reunion.
Marie was a long-time employee of C&P Telephone Company in Maryland. Following her retirement, she relocated to Myrtle Beach, where she was able to focus her attention on her passions... flowers, food, friends, family and faith. Marie loved gardening, people, and Jesus, and she was never happier than when surrounded by all three.
She embraced with zest her roles as wife, sister, aunt and mother, but she truly thrived in her role as… "Grammy." Grammy was a constant presence in the lives of her grandchildren and was always cheering the loudest (or taking the most photos) at their various activities. She was generous with her resources, gentle in her spirit, and, above-all… genuine with her love. All who knew her will miss her pleasant smile, her loving nature, her encouraging words and her natural kindness.
Marie delighted in growing plants, flowers and vegetables, and she spent the past three years nearly single-handedly creating a showplace of the gardens at Prospect Hill Plantation Inn. She loved cooking and canning, especially the harvest from her own gardens. Many were blessed with her gifts of homemade jams, jellies, muffins and sauces.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie H. Johnson; and two brothers, Willard Hinkle and Carol Hinkle. She is survived by her sister, Wavilene Beauchamp; brothers, Kenneth Hinkle (Hazel) and Lonnie Melvin Hinkle (Margaret); daughter, Paula W. Findley (Bobby), of Louisa; son James M. Johnson (Mary) of Taneytown, Md.; and 10 grandchildren, Vlad Johnson, Autumn Johnson, Madison Johnson, Haven Johnson, and Nadia Johnson, all of Taneytown; and Pavel Findley, Olga Findley, Bobby Findley III, Isabella Findley, and Raleigh Findley, all of Louisa.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, 2018 at Zion United Methodist Church, 1674 Zion Road, Troy, VA 22974. A reception will follow at Prospect Hill Plantation Inn, 2887 Poindexter Road, Louisa, VA 23093.
Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Conway, South Carolina. As much as Marie loved flowers, she loved live ones best. In lieu of cut flower arrangements, the family requests potted plants/bushes to be planted in a memorial garden at Prospect Hill, in Marie's honor
