Harriet Vaughan Obituary

Harriet Chilton Vaughan, 90, known as Hallie, a resident of Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, Virginia, passed on to be with the Lord Saturday, April 8, 2017.
She was the daughter of the Right Rev. Samuel B. and Harriet M. Chilton, and was born in the Hanover Courthouse community on September 16,1926.
She was a 1944 graduate of Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, and taught English for two years at Blackstone College in Blackstone, Virginia. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), past regent of the Louisa DAR Chapter, and a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Richmond.
Hallie raised her family in Louisa, Virginia, where she worked at the Louisa County High School library for many years. She was a soft-spoken, dedicated, compassionate and hard-working gentlewoman who preferred to let her actions speak louder than her words. Described as humble and filled with grace, she was always ready with a good book recommendation or un-judging words of support. Whether Mom, Hallie, Grandma, Mum-Mum, or GG, she will always be fondly remembered as the adventurous, loving and talented lady that she was.
She is predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Alexander B. Vaughan Jr.; daughter, Cathy V. Gill; and brother, Thomas H. Chilton.
She is survived by her brother, Charles A. Chilton (Gene) also of Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, Virginia; three sons, Alexander B. Vaughan III (Nancy) of Dover, Delaware; Robert C. Vaughan (Donna) of Benbrook, Texas; and Samuel B. Vaughan (Caroline) of Chesapeake, Virginia; and son-in-law, Harry Gill (Tammy) of Henrico, Virginia. She was grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Richmond, Virginia, in the commons room on Tuesday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Midwives for Haiti, a charity that was a passion of Hallie's granddaughter, Carrie Wortham, at midwivesforhaiti.org.
