James Dodd Obituary

James "Jimmie" Dodd, of Mineral, Virginia, died on August 30, 2017, at age 86.
Jimmie was born on May 22, 1931, on a hillside farm in Louisa County, Virginia, to the late Lloyd H. and Amy Hellems Dodd. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Rodney and Roland Dodd; and two sisters, Elizabeth Gilkerson and Margaret Steele.
He is survived by his wife of more than 66 years, Shirley Dodd; a daughter, Michelle Haymans and her husband, Scott; a granddaughter, Amanda Haymans Shane and her husband, Owen, and a grandson, Aaron Haymans. Other survivors include his sisters, Helen Shook of Orlando, Florida, Amy Lu Sandager of Colorado; and a brother, Lloyd H. Dodd Jr. of California.
Jimmie was a graduate of Louisa County High School and played on the first football team as quarterback. He was a member and president of the F.F.A. In 1951, he was awarded the American Farmer's degree and received his "Gold Key" in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1957, he was elected president of the Young Farmers of Virginia and also operated the Louisa Livestock Market. From 1968 to 2001, he was president of Dodd-Richardson Insurance Agency and later CEO of Dodd-Sisk-Whitlock.
Jimmie was president of the Louisa Lions Club and was named "Lion of the Year." He also served as president of the Louisa Ruritan Club and was active in fundraising for both clubs. In 1976, along with several other businessmen, he was instrumental in forming the Bank of Louisa, now Virginia Community Bank, and served as director until he was 75 years old. He was one of the owners of The Central Virginian newspaper and served on its board of directors.
For over 30 years, he managed the Mineral Bluegrass Festival as a fundraiser for the Mineral Fire Department. Always interested in his community, Jimmie served on the Mineral Town Council, the Mineral Planning Commission, the Louisa Planning Commission, and was chairman of the Louisa County Water Authority.
For fun and relaxation, he and Shirley enjoyed RVing in the 48 continental United States and Canada.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. prior to service at 2:30 p.m. at Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa.

So sorry to hear of Jimmie's passing. He was a good friend for many years. I was just a kid when his dad would take me to his farm. Loved being with the family. He will be missed.

In knowing Mr. Dodd over these past years he was a loving and doting father and grandfather to his children. They loved him and enjoyed the times of togetherness as often as possible. He was very kind to my family and often said he was glad that we had become a part of his family. He will be missed in hearts of so many friends and relatives that enjoyed knowing him. My prayers for his daughter and family will be that they find comfort in having him in their lives. Love to them. Elinor Owen
