H. Weisel Obituary

H. Alan Weisel

September 14, 1932 - May 16, 2024

State College, Pennsylvania - H. Alan Weisel departed this life on the morning of May 16, 2024, at age 91. Mr. Weisel was a son of Willis L. and Modesta A. Weisel of Johnsville, Bucks County, Hatboro and North Wales, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was a great-grandson of Samuel and Catherine Kober Weisel of Warrington Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His younger siblings are a brother, David, and a sister, Mary.

Alan Weisel lived a long and excellent life defined by a quiet integrity and authority, driven by his strong moral compass concerning right and wrong, deeply rooted in his beliefs within the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Alan's analytical and listening skills coupled with his innate common sense led others to always seek his opinion and guidance on matters.

Alan attended Pennsylvania State University, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Class of 1955. While at university, he was a member of Acacia fraternity through which he met the love of his life, Marjorie J. Herlocher, RN, marrying her in 1954. Marjorie is the daughter of Roy H. Herlocher and Rachel B. Herlocher of Lock Haven, Centre County, Pennsylvania.

The newly married couple started their life together in a rental apartment on Pine Street in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania for the 1954-55 school year. In 2022, they celebrated their 90th birthdays and 68th wedding anniversary with family and friends.

Following graduation from Penn State, Alan received a MS degree from the University of Maine in 1957, and worked with heavy process industries for several years. While earning an MBA from Pace University, he joined Coverdale & Colpitts (a New York City-based consulting firm) as a management and financial analysis consultant. Alan later joined the New York Public Service Commission's permanent professional staff responsible for regulating the state's electric, gas, steam, telecommunications, and water utilities, and overseeing the cable industry.

Avid travelers, Alan and Marjorie instilled the love of adventure with their children, Michael and Ruth, taking them to Canada for Expo 67 and an epic extended tour of Great Britain in 1969. Over subsequent years, they continued their extensive travels to Central and South America, Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

Upon retirement from the commission, Alan and Marjorie returned to their roots in Centre County, Pennsylvania. They became second-generation residents of Foxdale Village, a nonprofit Quaker life care community located in State College, Pennsylvania. Later, Alan served as a trustee for the community. The Weisel's escaped Pennsylvania's harsh winter months by spending them at Jekyll Island, Georgia (adopting a palm tree)!

In retirement, Alan extended his financial analysis skills to his investment portfolio, delighting in uncovering hidden value in overlooked stocks. But his retirement passion soon turned to genealogical research of the American Weisel family lineage, starting with George Michael Weisel and his German family arriving on October 17, 1732, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in British America. For years, he combed graveyards, libraries, archives, government, and church records to track down various family branches, correcting previous errors and finding lost relatives. His work now resides on the World Wide Web and with the Weisel family historian for use with this year's 122nd family reunion in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.

Both Alan and Marjorie Weisel were very active members of the Quaker religious community, with Alan serving as Clerk of Long Island Quarterly Meeting. Alan was a member of Conscience Bay Friends Meeting, St. James, New York, continuing a family Quaker heritage from his maternal ancestors.

Arrangements are under the direction of PA Simple Cremation, Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, a son, Michael L. Weisel (Ella) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and a daughter, Ruth W. Bohorquez (Camilo) of Atlanta, Georgia and grandchildren: Nicolas Bohorquez (Madison), Avery Weisel and Schuyler Weisel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Directors Fund for Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, c/o Centre Foundation, 1377 Ridge Master Drive, State College, PA 16803. Henry Alan Weisel volunteered for 16 years at the Environmental Center, which engages more than 4,000 elementary students yearly in educational interaction with native wildlife.
