Lenore K. Horner

November 26, 1925 - November 14, 2023

State College, Pennsylvania - Lenore K. Horner, 97, of Sarasota, FL, died on November 14, 2023. Born in Milton, PA and reared in Selinsgrove, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ira W. and Ida G. (Newman) Garman. After graduating from Selinsgrove High School she earned her B.S. degree from Susquehanna University, M.A. degree from Columbia University and D.Ed degree from The Pennsylvania State University. In addition, she studied clarinet at the Juilliard School.

After college Lenore taught music in the Millersburg School District, PA, Union Free School District, North Point, Long Island, Harrisburg City School District and State College Area School District. For eight years she conducted a multiple choir program at Grace Lutheran Church and did private studio teaching piano and clarinet. She also served as a graduate teaching assistant at The Pennsylvania State University.

Lenore was a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, the Pi Lambda Theta and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Societies and a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota National Music Fraternity. She was chosen as the Outstanding Young Music Educator for the Harrisburg School District and published several articles in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Magazine. She was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church, State College and St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sarasota.

She was a 50 year member of the American Association of University Women, a DAR member of the Osceola Chapter, FL and an associate member of DAR Bellefonte Chapter, PA and the Betty Allen DAR Chapter of Northampton, MA. She served as Scholarship Chairman of the DAR Osceola Chapter, FL and the Palm Aire Women's Club, Sarasota, FL where she had a music scholarship given in her honor.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jackson Horner. She is survived by one daughter, Jocelyn I. Horner Molitor (Peter) of Hatfield, MA; grandson, Robert Molitor and a great-grandson, Jackson Molitor.

A graveside service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery at a later date. In her memory, contributions may be made to the Lenore K. Horner Woodwind Endowment at Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, PA, or to Grace Lutheran Church, State College, PA or St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sarasota, FL.

Wonderful woman. My first band teacher and her husband , Jackson, was my track and cross country coach. I always appreciated her when she remembered me at his retirement. She was well accomplished in her own right and I am very thankful to be part of hers. RIP
