Richard's family should know that his influence will ripple for generations. He changed the way we view Earth's bounty, something few can honestly say. I never met the man, he retired when I was 7 years old, but he influenced me in a way few others can claim. I only wish more people were as smart, passionate, and wanted to truly understand the planet we all call home like he did.

Dear Nancy and Gordon Family,
I am very sorry for your loss. I knew Dick as my Professor at Penn State, he was a member of my doctoral committee. First and foremost he was a kind man, and always constructive. He was an inspiration to me and countless students because of his intelligence, his accomplishments, his perseverance, and his work ethic. He was a devoted professor and mentor to so many—a treasure in every sense of the word.

nancy and the family, so sorry to hear of dick's passing. A giant in his field, I always learned something when we chatted; I would comment on something, he would smile, hesitate a few seconds, and then tell me why I was missing some key element in how we needed to think about such things. He lifted his unit and many others at Penn State and will be sorely missed. To a life well lived, The Lombras
