William Updegraff Obituary

William M. Updegraff, Jr.

November 2, 1936 - September 18, 2024

State College, Pennsylvania - William M. "Bill" Updegraff Jr, a beloved figure in the State College and Boalsburg community and a respected business owner, passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 18, 2024, in State College, PA. Bill's life was marked by his dedication to his work, his family, and his unyielding passion for the State College community. Born on November 2, 1936 in Williamsport, he was the son of the late William M. and Frances Hoover Updegraff. On September 12, 1959 he married Stella Mazurik, who preceded him in death on March 26, 2020.

He is survived by a son, Robert Andrew Updegraff and his wife, Suzanne, of Frederick, MD; a sister, Dorothy Ann Lingenfelter of Sun City West, AZ; two grandchildren, Bradley Updegraff and Molly Updegraff with her husband Matt Haeger. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, William M. "Opie" Updegraff, III, on October 21, 2009.

Bill was a 1954 graduate of Williamsport High School. He received a bachelor's degree in business from Penn State University in 1958. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish the Updegraff & Updegraff Accounting Firm where he worked with his son, Opie. His business kept him busy, as well as connected and embedded in the state college community. Some may remember the car wash Bill owned as well.

Bill's faith was an integral part of his life. He was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Boalsburg. He also had a tradition of joining his friends for "Church" every Friday at the American Legion, rain or shine.

Bill could always be seen making his rounds along Calder Way to see friends and business associates. He was a regular at the Waffle Shop, The Diner, and The Cheese Shoppe, and was a member of the Elk Lodge and YMCA. Bill's passion for Pennsylvania sports, especially Penn State Football was unrivaled, never missing a game or tailgate.

Bill enjoyed the Preakness and the Saratoga Race tracks. His famous Memorial Day parties are remembered by many. Bill always had peanuts in one hand and a Yuengling in the other.

He leaves behind a community that respected him, a family that adored him, and a memory that will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

In celebration of Bill's life, his family will gather in private to honor his memory, with a ceremony to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to The Centre Foundation or to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society, linked below.
