Terry Calhoon Obituary

Terry Alan Calhoon CHARLESTON - Terry Alan Calhoon, 60, beloved husband of Barbara Hathaway Calhoon, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 3, 2011. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of John Hunter Calhoon and Mary Anne Brickerd Calhoon on January 3, 1951. Terry attended the prestigious DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, MD playing varsity football and baseball and earning a full football scholarship to Clemson University. He played as an offensive lineman at Clemson until his graduation in 1973. Terry spent his free time after work coaching for the Boys and Girls Clubs of America in Hyattsville, Maryland and then at St. John's High School in D.C. He continued coaching after he and his wife moved to Charleston, S.C., first at St. Paul's Country Day and then at First Baptist School. Terry truly enjoyed his time coaching various teams and watching the students mature into adulthood, better people for having learned the lessons of good sportsmanship. He was an electrical salesman for various electrical supply companies in the low country including Cameron and Barkley, Eck Supply, and Faulkner-Haynes. Those who knew him will always remember him as a beloved husband, father and friend, a man on whom one could depend and who never gave up. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara H. Barbara,

I grew up with the whole Calhoon clan through Bladensburg Boys Club back in the 50's and 60's. My parents and Johnny and Maryann were very close for many years. Terry's brother Mike and I are the same age and we played sports together for most of our entire childhood. Terry was a big part of my life too. We played football together because he was so much bigger than we were. Our families lived only a couple of blocks from each other and I spent many summer days over at the Calhoon home playing with both Mike and Terry. Terry coached my younger brother Donnie in football after his days at Clemson. He was a good coach and a good friend. The whole family was part of our extended Boys Club family for many, many years.
My heart goes out to you for your loss. Terry and his mom and dad will always be a part of me. God Bless You and your family.

Sincerely, Allen Derwent

Dear Barbara,
I was shocked and so sad to hear of Terry's passing. I lost touch with Terry when I moved to Union but I thought of him often. He was such an awesome guy, I used to love hanging out with him. He will be missed but not forgotten. You and your family will be in my prayers.

I'm so sorry for your loss. What I remember about Terry is how he used to crush me in during football scrimmages even though I was a senior.
