SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Dr. Carpenter, 81, a widow, died at the Sherman Hospice Center, Hospice of the Valley, Scottsdale, Arizona, on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. She was born in Montreal, Canada, and spent her early life in the New York City area. She attended and was graduated from Hunter College High School, Brooklyn College, and New York University. Her Ph. D is in Administration. She is listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who of American Women.
Dr. Carpenter is survived by her daughter, Lucy Harrow, her son-in-law, Scott Harrow, her son, Dr. Jack Ostroff, her daughter-in-law, Margaret Ostroff, her three step-daughters, Annette Freedman, Cynthia Jefferson, and Lori Bembry, her step son-in-law Steven Freedman, her grandchildren Rachel Harrow and Rebecca Harrow, and her step-grand children Christina Jefferson, Alison Freedman, Emily Freedman, Jonathan Bembry, and Jason Bembry.
Dr. Carpenter had a long and distinguished career as an educator. She served in the New York Metropolitan area as a public school teacher, an adjunct professor, a school administrator, an Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, and a Superintendent of Schools. Since her retirement she has spent her time pursuing her interests in painting, sculpture, golf, duplicate bridge, tournament scrabble, computers, and writing. Her published work includes: A Curriculum Guide to the Public Schools of America; Tutoring For Pay; Lady of the Lake: Art and Craftiness; Crystal Slopes; A Style of Their Own; The Brosh; Inherit the Rainbow; Make Way For Pugsley; and Musings. In addition to her educational service, over the years she served as: a Great Books Co-leader; Glen Rock New Jersey Library Board Trustee; United Fund Drive Trustee; American Association of Educational Negotiators Member; New Jersey Association of Educational Personnel Administrators President; New York City Assistant Principals Association President; New York City Council Of Supervisory Associations Vice President; Vacation Exchange Club President; Bergen County Superintendents' Association President; and Iredell County North Carolina Board of Adjustment Vice Chairman. Dr. Carpenter was a member of several writers' groups including: The National Writer's Association; The National Association of Children's Writers and Illustrators; The Romance Writers of America; The Arizona Romance Writers; and The Arizona Writer's Association. She was also a member of the American Contract Bridge League and the National Scrabble Association. There will be no formal memorial service. She suggested that people wishing to remember her, buy themselves a flower on her birthday, June 1. In addition, donations in her name can be made to either Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix, Arizona; The American Cancer Society; or The American Diabetes Association.
She will be very much missed by her family and friends.
