Bobby Hussey Obituary

Bobby Wayne Hussey
DENVER -- Mr. Hussey, 67, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 at Carolinas Medical Center. He was born on April 2, 1940 in Seagrove, NC to Rosa and James Bertie Hussey.
A veteran of over 30 years as a college basketball coach, he served as a head coach for 20 years at Belmont Abbey, Davidson and Virginia Tech.
The 1963 graduate of Appalachian State began his head coaching career at Kings Mountain High in North Carolina where he posted a 67-6 record over four years. From there he moved on to Belmont Abbey as a head coach. He finished with a 179-111 record at the school, including 96- 31 in his final four years.
Hussey became a Division I head coach at Davidson College. Between 1981-89, he led the Wildcats to 108 victories, including a Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1985-86.
He served as an assistant coach at Clemson for the 1989-90 season when the Tigers finished 26-10 and won the ACC regular season championship. That team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
Hussey became an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 1991-97. The Hokies won the NIT Championship in 1995 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 1996. In 1997-98, he became the head coach at Virginia Tech, a position he held for two seasons.
He then returned to Clemson for three seasons and completed his college coaching career in 2002-03 with the Tigers.
Hussey's passion for life showed both on and off the basketball court. As a coach and mentor, he touched the lives of countless student- athletes and coaches over the past 30-plus years. As a husband, father and friend, he was simply the perfect role model.

I will miss Bobby asking "Did you make me any brownies?" Basketball has lost a giant. He was a wonderful mentor to young men. He will be sadly missed. God bless and comfort you and your family, Sandra.
