Dr. Daniel Edwin Bailey
GREENSBORO -- Dr. Daniel Edwin Bailey, 81 (July 13, 1924), left his earthly shell on Easter Morning, April 16, 2006, at 3:46 AM to join his mother and father, Lillie Staley Bailey and Doctor Addison Bailey; his sister, Nina Jean Bailey Tice; his brother, Maynard Sheldon Bailey; and his son, Thomas Edwin Bailey; eight aunts and six uncles at the ultimate Easter reunion.
A memorial service will be held at Grays Chapel United Methodist Church, Franklinville, NC on Thursday at 3 PM. The Reverend James G. Allred and The Reverend Jacqueline E. Tookey will officiate. Family will receive visitors in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
The family left behind to celebrate his life are his wife, Kathryn Thomas Bailey of the home; his stepson, Brian Thomas Kidd of Tucson, AZ (Amy); his brother, The Reverend Dewey Addison Bailey (Barbara) of Valdese; Mildred Crayton Bailey and children: Daniel Edwin Bailey, Jr. (Sharon) of Charlotte; Dr. Ruth Elizabeth Bailey of Dillsboro; Janis Bailey Laws (Jim) of Greensboro; Lisa Bailey Corbitt (Chris) of Charlotte; grandchildren: Jeremy and Patrick Bailey, Daniel and Elizabeth Eskridge, Michael and Jason Laws, Tyler and Matthew Corbitt.
He received a Purple Heart for his service in the US Marine Corps during World War II. He graduated from Pfeiffer, Catawba, and Duke Divinity School.
Dr. Bailey was a retired United Methodist Minister in the WNCC of the UMC. He served as a District Superintendent in Winston-Salem (1973-1978). He served the Liberty Circuit (1946), New London Circuit (1947), Bethany (1950), Trinity (1954) and Hickory Grove UMC in Charlotte (1957); Reidsville Main Street Methodist (1961); Central in Mount Airy (1965), First Church of Salisbury (1969), and Grays Chapel UMC (1984). He retired in 1988.
He was a member of the American Rose Society and enjoyed growing and exhibiting roses. He served as a Horticulture Judge in many Local, District, and National Shows. He was presented the Outstanding Judge of the Year award for the Carolina District of the American Rose Society in 2005.
His last wishes were to donate his body to Duke Medical Center. Donations can be made to Grays Chapel United Methodist Church, 5056 Highway 22 N., Franklinville, NC 27248 or the American Rose Society, PO Box 30,000, Shreveport, LA 71130-3-0030.
Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel is serving the family of Dr. Bailey in Greensboro.
