David Thompson Obituary

David A. Thompson
David A. Thompson, a highly respected educator and leader in the field of independent school athletics, of Lake Norman and previously of Charlotte, died on Sunday, April 15, 2012. Mr. Thompson, fondly known as 'Coach T,' was 73 years of age.
A native of Durham, North Carolina, Mr. Thompson graduated from Durham High School in 1956, and was offered track scholarships to Duke University and East Carolina University. He selected ECU, and attended from 1956 to 1959 - at which time he decided to enter the U.S. Navy. Following this service, he returned to ECU to complete his coursework and graduated in 1963. Mr. Thompson then moved to Charlotte, where he began his career as a teacher, coach, and athletic director with the Albemarle Road Junior High School.
In 1970, with the founding of Charlotte Latin School, Mr. Thompson accepted a position as the school's first athletic director. In that role and for fifteen years, he led the development of the school's athletic and physical education programs. Mr. Thompson also served as head coach of the school's varsity boys basketball team for 10 seasons without a losing record, as well as coaching other activities including pole vaulting. Additionally during that time, he served as the Co-Founder and first President of the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association.
From 1978 to 1985, Mr. Thompson served as the second President of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association. During his tenure and direction, the NCISAA developed its statement of core values and set of regulations to govern an increasing membership of independent schools across the State. In recognition for his leadership during this critical formative period, the association elected Mr. Thompson to its first class of the Hall of Fame in 2010.
In 1985, Mr. Thompson left school athletics to pursue a career in insurance with Jefferson Pilot Financial. He later founded Thompson and Associates Insurance Agency, and he remained an insurance agent until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Thompson also took an active interest in local civic matters, and he ran in 1988 for a seat on the Charlotte City Council.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Rhetta Blakeney Thompson, sons Michael Anthony Thompson (Becky) and David Christian Thompson (Lisa), daughter Rene' Thompson Leaver (Mark), stepsons Robert Blakeney Meyer (Elizabeth) and Michael McCauley Meyer (Ellen), and grandchildren Austin and Carter Thompson, Sarah Milton, Eliza and Samantha Leaver, and Robert and Charley Meyer.
Funeral services will be conducted at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC, at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 21, with the Reverend Verdery Kerr in charge.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Outreach Fund at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.

Dear Rhetta and Family. We are so sorry to hear of David's passing. We didn't find out until yesterday. We hold you up in our prayers. There are many fond memories. One in particular is Santa on the roof and a very young David awaitng his arrival. One could hear the reindeer pawing on the rooftop! Another is a visit to your home on the lake with my daddy. Navy men love their water! Keep faith in your heart and if it starts to dwindle, remeber the mustart seed in Matthew.

Dear Rhetta and Family. We just found about David yesterday. We are so sorry. We are keeping you in our prayers to have peace in your hearts. Keep your faith, even if it is as small as a mustard seed.

Thanks, Dave, for being a great coach to me and many others at Albemarle Road - you challenged us and inspired us. And thanks for being a great boss at the swim club. And most of all, thanks for your friendship.

Dave and my husband, Gil Murdock (PDS), worked/coached together in the 70' s and 80's. While they were competitors, there was always mutual respect. I worked with Dave at Latin in the early 80's; many fond memories. May God grant you peace and friends provide comfort. With best regards ~ Linda Murdock

David had a wonderful sense of humor as did his children. Watching him coach the cast of characters he had in those early years was a real joy about which we had lots of laughs. He did make a difference while he was at Latin,. Jim Slick Rutherford

David and I shared much in common as we worked together on NCISAA matters while coaching competing basketball teams. David never lost perspective relative to the important issues of education. Most memorable to me however, was his undying sense of humor which turned many an intense moment into one of bonding for all involved.

I loved Dave and will truly miss him.

My thoughts are with you at this time as I fondly remember the good times I shared with Coach "T" during the early years of Charlotte Latin. I especially have great memories of coaching his son, Mike, and his stepsons. God bless you all.

My condolences to David and his family. I went thru grammar school with David and his mother was our 4th grade teacher. She was a wonderful lady and apparently instilled those qualities in David.

I still remember when Coach "T" walked in before practice with a box of shirts that said "Our vaulters have higher standards" (the standard is the vertical frame where the pole vault cross-bar is placed). Such heartfelt philosophy influenced many of us well beyond sports. We celebrate the life he lived, but also those lives he deeply touched.

April 19, 2012

Also as a member of David's DHS class of '56 please know how we all feel when we lose one of our own. Times passes so quickly. We have such great memories of one of the closest classes to graduate. We certainly can be proud of David's accomplishments. To his wife and family, I am deeply saddened by his passing.

One of my greatest joys in life was playing basketball for Coach T. He taught us more than just the game basketball. The three hours a day we spent with him during the season was more time any teammate spent with any other adult. Dave's positive influence made a difference in his players lives. I am grateful for the time I spent with Dave.

Coach T's Family,
I attended CLS and graduated in 86'. I was not a good student but loved sports management and working. I spent much of my time in Belk Gym and on the fields with Coach T. and later Coach Faulkner. I know today I was then a "Dennis the Menace" always asking questions and what I could do next. Coach T. was never too busy to talk, advise, council, joke, and show me how to do something. He was so good later he was able to sit back and enjoy a game without the worries of coordinating the gym events. Thank you for sharing him with so many who were able to glean some of his wit, vigor for life, and friendly smile.

Attending the Varsity basketball games is a fond memory of mine from my days at Latin. It wasn't just all the kids he coached; it was also all the kids who got to watch the kids he coached that makes Coach Thompson memorable!
