Edward Easton Obituary

Edward James Easton, Jr., MD
February 12, 1943 - August 16, 2023
Charlotte, North Carolina - Edward James Easton, Jr., MD: beloved son of Edward Sr. and Eleanor; husband of 50 years to Gretchen; devoted father to Brooke, Blair, and Ingrid; grandfather ("Doc") to Oak, Sedley, Hezekiah, Rhodes, and Gus; father-in-law to Clayton and Jonathan; dear friend to John, Peggy, Frank, and Debbie; companion to shelties; precious child of God. Ed was a natural athlete and enjoyed competing in tennis and golf. He loved trees, riding his road and mountain bikes, and reading the Wall Street Journal. He was happiest spending time at Kiawah Island with his family and dogs. Ed will be remembered for his smile, sense of humor, generosity, and dedication to family. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Ed was born February 12th, 1943 in Brockton, Massachusetts and passed peacefully at home in Charlotte on August 16th, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. Ed enrolled at Boston College with dreams of majoring in English and becoming a teacher, but his talents led him to science and eventually a medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. He then completed both an internship and residency in internal medicine at Tufts Medical Center, where a spunky nurse named Gretchen Lindquist caught his attention and never let go. While Gretchen pursued a nursing graduate degree in Colorado, Ed served as lieutenant commander in the U.S. Public Health Service (CDC) in Tucson, Arizona and Nogales, Mexico. He developed an affinity for wintertime golf while living in the southwest, before returning to the northeast to complete his residency in radiology/nuclear medicine at Yale-New Haven Medical Center. Ed and Gretchen married in Connecticut in 1973. Ed was able to resume warm weather golf with a relocation to Charlotte in 1976, joining Charlotte Radiology Group as the Director of Nuclear Medicine. Charlotte quickly became home for the Eastons, where they started their family and made lifelong friends. Ed completed his professional career serving at the Naval Medical Center at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He spent retirement working on his chess game, perfecting his two handed forehand, and loving his growing family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed's honor to Youth on Course, 30 Ragsdale Dr, Suite 201, Monterey CA 93940 or online https://youthoncourse.org/donate
A private celebration of Ed's life will be scheduled for a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service. 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Gretchen, Brook, Blair, Ingrid,
Words can never adequately express the feelings that we have when a loved one passes. I, again, wasn't fortunate enough to have met Dr . in person but I was able to share some "zoom" time with him when Blair was here with us. It was a pleasure to meet him and speak to Gretchen. On this anniversary, I know that you all are still hurting emotionally and I know that Blair misses him daily. I just want the Easton family know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Victoria always had a wonderful time when she was able to visit and enjoyed the love that you all shared with one another. She also misses him. I wish you all love and healing for your loss of a wonderful husband and father.
God Bless

I have fond memories of working with Dr. Easton at the Carolinas Medical Center. He was a great teacher and mentor. I´m grateful for everything he did to support my personal and professional growth. God bless you, god bless your family. Dr. Patrick Chestnut and family.

Dear Gretchen,
Ann and I are so saddened by the news of Ed´s passing. Ed and I were kindred spirits in so many ways. He was one of the finest physicians I ever had the pleasure of working with. His knowledge was so vast as to be intimidating to partners who envied the ease with which he conversed with the clinicians so dependent on his knowledge and ability to convey it in an understandable fashion. After his,"retirement," I and several others felt a deep void in our lives. No one ever truly was able to replace this loss. We will forever remember your generosity in letting us vacation at your Kiawah house. We will forever keep you all in our prayers. Peace.

Gretchen, Brook, Blair, Ingrid. Unfortunately I never had the honors of meeting Ed face to face , with the exceptions of the times we would "Face Time" with Blair at our house or Face Time while Blair was visiting the family. Blair always spoke so very highly about his father and admired him so very much. He enjoyed their sports outings, as participants and observers. I know he was a wonderful person because I have had the opportunity and privilege to spend time with Blair, and it is obvious that he was blessed with a very special family. To all of the family, I wish we were closer in geographical distance, but if there is anything that we can do beyond our daily lifting of prayers for some peace , comfort an spiritual healing for all of you during these very difficult times, we are there for you. Please give each other warm embraces and know that through your faith in God, he will comfort you and as he promised all of us, we will be reunited again with our loved ones. God Bless you and give you some peace.
