Eugene Davant Obituary

Eugene Milburn Davant, Sr.
Mr. Davant, 85, died at The Carriage Club in Charlotte, NC on October 4th, 2006 surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born November 10th, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee to Mary Milburn and Joseph Allison Davant, Sr. He moved to Charlotte in 1929. He attended Myers Park Elementary School and graduated from Central High School in 1938. He also attended Woodberry Forest. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1942 where he was Captain of the wrestling team and belonged to DKE fraternity. He served during World War II in the Army Air Corps in Kunming, China. After the war, he spent time in Panama building the Panama Canal.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Peetie Woodall Davant, his sons and their wives Milburn & Tracey Davant, Wescott & Nellie Davant, his daughter and her husband Ann & John Crehore, and four grandchildren: Thomas & Mary Carlisle Crehore, Conner & Abby Davant who fondly called him 'Butterbean'. He is also survived by his brother, Allison Davant and his wife Anne, a brother-in-law, Dr. Dave Tayloe of Washington, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene was a vibrant man and was passionate about many things. He was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, teaching Sunday School for many years. He started the Watchmen on the Wall prayer ministry. He was very active in Kairos and Epiphany Prison Ministries. In 1946, he was the founding Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #17 at Christ Episcopal Church. In 2001, the St. George Episcopal Medal was presented to Gene by the Episcopal Church and the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service leading toward the spiritual, physical, mental and moral development of youth. Gene served as the first president of the Board of Children's Theater of Charlotte where his mother was its first Director. A commercial real estate agent, he was President of Davant Realty. Gene served four terms on the Habitat Charlotte Board of Directors. In addition to swinging a hammer, he worked to acquire over 300 lots for Habitat houses. After a heart attack in January 1998, he relinquished his title as Habitat's 'Dirt Man'. In May of 2000 Davant Glen, a Habitat neighborhood, was named in his honor.
Gene loved the outdoors. When he was young, he enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing having once climbed the Grand Teton. He enjoyed playing golf at the Charlotte Country Club where he was a member. He loved racing his Lightning with his daughter Ann as crew at the Catawba Yacht Club and taking people for rides on his Hobie Cat while at Camp Seafarer's Family Camp.
Special thanks to all the staff and nurses at The Carriage Club and to Hospice for their tender loving care.
A celebration and thanksgiving of his life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 9th with interment following in the Memorial Garden. The family will receive visitors at the Church following the interment.

Mrs. Davant and Family,

I just learned of Mr. Davant's death. I had been thinking about him lately and and talking about the joy I had while working for him and how he came to visit when I had Antanise and how I wished I had a picture of him holding her when she was just 1 day old. I will pray for you, and your entire family. May God Bless each and everyone and keep you safe.

Sincerely,

Nicole Foust Williams and Family

Dear Friends,
I only learned of Gene's death today the 10th. Gene was a guiding light in so many lives. The young men at the prison looked to Gene as a role model. He was a most compasionate person and my life has been blessed as a result of the time we spent together visiting the prisons. Gene will be greatly missed.

Mrs. Davant, I served with Gene on various Realtors committee's and boards and enjoy the memories of many lively discussions. His enthusiasm got me involved with Habitat as well. His contributions will linger for a long time.

I'm sorry that I won't be able to attend the funeral, I'm recovering from knee surgery.

Gene was a compassionate and committed man who, despite personal success, cared deeply about those less fortunate. He was a great joy to work with at Habitat/Charlotte, and I treasure the letters he wrote after Habitat led me to the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. His loss is a great one.

Peetie and family,
We are so sorry to read this. We have thought of all of you so often since our move to Raleigh. We regret that we have not let any of you know about those thoughts and memories.
Gene was a man of such diverse interests. We were always so grateful that we could turn to him when we needed help finding space for several campaigns. Even after getting set up he would continue to follow through on arrangements and interest. We also remember sharing time with all of you at the lake, enjoying vegetables fresh from the garden along with plenty of fresh air and room for the kids "to go wild".
We leave today for a business trip to the west coast so we cannot be there in person. Know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. We join so many others in being thankful for a life and family well lived. May God bless all of you.

I am so sorry I didn't get to visit with Gene before he died. He recruited me to assist him with Explorer Post 17 based at Christ Episcopal Church way back in 1960 shortly after I graduated from UNC.

The kids were great, and Gene was an outstanding youth leader who was respected and liked by all who knew him.

He will be missed.

To the Davant Family: I will miss Gene terribly. I worked with him in Habitat projects and I visited him regularly in the Medical Facility at The Carriage House. He and I would discuss Habitat projects and even though he could not participate as he wished, he was eager to hear all about the projects on which I was involved. Gene was a joy to be around and his laugh was infectious. I am sure God joyfully welcomed Gene home.
