Ginny McEwen Obituary

Ginny McEwen
Ginny McEwen died peacefully at her home, with family and friends by her side, in Charlotte, NC, on August 6, 2011, after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. Born in 1951 in Conroe, TX, Ginny had recently celebrated her 60th birthday.
Ginny spent her youth and early teens in Texas, primarily in Houston. At 16, her family moved to Atlanta, GA, where she graduated from The Lovett School in 1968. After moving to North Carolina, Ginny graduated cum laude from The University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. White attending UNCC, she was elected President for the UNCC Student Nurses Association from 1982-1983. Ginny became a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society in addition to being inducted into the UNCC chapters of Sigma Theta Tau, Gamma Iota , and the Honor Society of Nursing. Ginny was also the recipient of the Lettie P. Whitehead and Ruth C. Clarke nursing scholarships. Because of her dedication, hard work, and leadership qualities, Ginny was named Student Nurse of the Year in the North Carolina Nurses Association for District 5 in 1983. Upon graduating from UNCC, Ginny was the recipient of one of the school's highest awards, the Edith Broker Award, which is given by the UNCC College of Nursing Alumni in honor of the first Dean of the School of Nursing. This award recognizes professionalism, leadership and scholastic achievement.
Ginny possessed all these characteristics in everything she did in life. Ginny went on to graduate from UNCC/Carolina's Medical Center, earning her Master's of Science Nursing in Anesthesia degree in 1995, whereupon she became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), her field of practice until she died. Ginny was so many things to so many people. She was a gifted musician who played the piano, violin, and guitar. She loved to spend her leisure time entertaining, camping, kayaking, gardening, cooking, knitting, sewing, painting, crafting, and playing with her adorable wire-haired terriers Zip and Star. Ginny was an ambitious, multi-tasking go-getter. In short, there was nothing Ginny couldn't accomplish. Both an artist and an intellect, there was not a skill or craft she could not learn. Ginny is survived by her daughter Grace McEwen of Charlotte, NC, and two brothers Jay (Bert) Beadle and Bill Beadle, both from Atlanta, GA. A memorial service to celebrate Ginny's life will be held on October 15, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Charlotte where Ginny was a member. The church address is 115 West 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. Because Ginny loved to be surrounded by color, all are welcome to wear something colorful to the service, a tribute to the colorful woman she indeed was. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to any of the following three charities: 1) St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 115 W. 7th St, Charlotte, NC 28202 2) Blumenthal Cancer Center/Carolinas Healthcare, PO Box 32861, Charlotte, NC 28232 3) Penland School of Crafts, Penland, NC, 67 Doras Trail, Penland, NC 28765. In the 'For' line of the check, write 'Memorial Donation for Virginia McEwen.'

Ginny lived life to the fullest. Her last Spring she gave her all to learning new methods of painting in a class at Central Piedmont College. She was an inspiration to us all.

Those of us at St. Peter's that knew her will miss her beautiful smile, her engaging laugh and joyful demeanor. It has been my honor to know both Ginny and Grace through my work with the youth group at St. Peter's. She is missed by all who knew her. I am very sad that i am unable to attend the memorial service but I know it will be filled with love, I am keeping Grace in my prayers and know that losing her mother leaves an empty space in her heart. Please know that I am praying for you all and am grateful for my memories of Ginny.

Ginny was a student of mine in the nursing program at UNCC. She was a special student and much loved by many. I remember meeting her daughter Grace when she was very young. Ginny's evidence of love for her was apparent. What a wonderful mother she must have been! My heart goes out to the family for loss of such a wonderful woman. I can only imagine that she died with the grace with which she lived. Frances King

Ginny was an old and dear friend that we spent many good times together in our younger and later years. Her daughter Grace was beloved by Ginny. I am so sad of her passing. She was a highly intelligent and insigtful person who lived life to the fullest. I have many fond memories of our escapades together. She loved her brothers Bert and Bill and always talked lovingly of both of them. What a less interesting place this world is without her!

I spent many fun times kayaking and camping with Ginny, as well as spending time at her home, sharing a meal, and sitting on her porch enjoying the outdoors. I will miss her very much.

Ginny was an awesome lady & a great nurse anesthetist. It was an honor to work with her. I've missed her sweet face in the O.R. but now take solace in the knowledge that she's with her Lord & Savior in Heaven.

We met Ginny through our sister-in-law, Lois McGregor, another gifted CRNA and woman. Ginny brightened up any room. We miss her (and Lois) tremendously.

I knew Ginny at Lovett and she was a wonderful friend. We were a year apart when that made some kind of difference, bu she never allowed it to be a problem. Lost touch after and was saddened to read about her passing yesterday. She was a good soul and my condolences to her family and loved ones.
