Golda Robinson Obituary

Golda Campbell Robinson
Mrs. Robinson, formerly of Charlotte, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2008, at Serenity House in Mooresville, NC. On Sunday, September 28, 2008, a service of witness to the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in celebration of the life of Golda Campbell Robinson will be held at 3:00 p.m., at Newell Presbyterian Church, 1500 Rocky River Road West, Newell, NC. Officiating the service will be the Reverend Brad Busiek of Newell Presbyterian and the Reverend John Dawson of Lakeside Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, NC. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 1:30 until the time of the service. The service will conclude at the graveside in the church cemetery.
The daughter of Sidney Alexander 'Alec' and Bessie Huntley Campbell, Golda was born on October 11, 1918, in the Campbell family homeplace in Angelus, a community located in the sand hills near Jefferson, SC. As a graduate of Macedonia-Angelus High School and one of the twelve members of the class of 1937, Golda formed friendships which were to be treasured for the rest of her life.
Following high school, Golda moved to Charlotte and began work at Carolina Bakery, where she met her future husband, Marshall. They were married on September 23, 1938, and made their home in Charlotte. After a few years, Marshall went to work for Queen City Trailways. Later, Golda took a job in the office of the company, where she worked until she and Marshall adopted their daughter Marsha in October, 1946. Another addition to the family arrived in April of 1950 with the adoption of their son Kenneth. In 1951, Marshall and Golda bought acreage and built their dream home on Rocky River Road West (known by most in the area as Jackass Avenue, in reference to the animals raised by Mr. L.B. Newell for whose family the community was named). Golda enjoyed the next several years as a stay-at-home mom, and her family was blessed by her mothering and homemaking talents. She was always happiest doing for her family and friends, sharing the bounty of the large garden she and Marshall had every year, putting up countless jars of canned fruit and vegetables as well as filling their freezer with meat from the cattle, hogs, and chickens they raised. Golda was also an excellent seamstress and made many of her own and her daughter's clothes. As one who tried never to be wasteful, she even washed the chicken feed sacks, after they had been emptied, and used them to sew matching skirts for Marsha and her best friend DeAnne Roberts to wear to school, which they did proudly. Another of Golda's interests and talents was growing beautiful flowers, especially roses, and was an active member of the Charcon Heights Garden Club as long as her health permitted.
Golda was also active in her church, Newell Presbyterian, as long as she was able. Over the years she served as Bible School teacher, Circle member, member of the Women of the Church and recipient of a Lifetime Membership, Elder, and as all-time winner of the award for best chicken and dumplings, which were a necessity at church suppers.
In addition to her parents, Alec and Bessie Campbell, Mrs. Robinson was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Marshall Robinson; three brothers and a sister-in-law: Archie Campbell of Jefferson, SC; Frank Campbell and wife Bell Robinson Campbell of Charlotte, NC; and Robert Campbell of Charlotte; her step-brother Billy Campbell of Jefferson, SC; and her step-mother Alma Eubanks Campbell of Jefferson, SC.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth 'K.C.' Robinson of Shelby, NC; her daughter, Marsha Jones and husband Richard of Mooresville, NC; brother, Ben Campbell and wife Lucille of Pleasant Hill, SC; brother, Aron Campbell Huntley and wife Barbara of Charlotte, NC; granddaughter, Dana Robinson Martin, her husband Joseph, and daughter Antonia of Matthews, NC; and grandson, Bart Jones and his wife Suzanne Walat Jones of Portsmouth, VA. Mrs. Robinson is also survived by brother-in-law, Lee Robinson and his wife Martha; sisters-in-law, Elsie Massey Campbell of Mooresville, NC, Dorcas Burkeholder Campbell of Jefferson, SC, Elsie Rollins Robinson of Greensboro, NC, and Kathleen Whitesides Robinson of Charlotte, NC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to express our deep appreciation for the loving and compassionate care which Golda received from the staff of the Mooresville Center of Genesis Healthcare, especially the angels on the 600 hall; the doctors, nurses, and volunteers of Hospice of Iredell County and of Serenity House in Mooresville, NC.
In keeping with Golda's love for growing beauty, flowers will be appreciated. However, for those who prefer, memorials may be sent to Hospice of Iredell County or to Serenity House, 110 Centre Church Road, Mooresville, NC 28117.
The family is being served by McEwen Funeral Home, Derita Chapel.
