I used to come into the restaurant as a child and can still remember Papa Gus's loving blue eyes. I secretly thought he might be Santa Claus! He always brought me out a bowl of banana pudding when I finished my dinner. What a sweet soul. Love to his family.

We celebrated my mother-in-law's 93rd birthday this week. For many years, she was a member of Charlotte's Sweet Adeleine's, and said that after practice, they always went to Gus' for food and fellowship. The following poem was written by Mary K. Coffman (deceased), who was Director of Sweet Adeleines:
"GUS"
"Fresh from my farm" says the sign that entices us,
To a down home eatin' place overseen by Gus,
No stuffy shirts allowed in here,
no haughty maitre d' peering down his chilly nose at country little me.
Come right in and find a place anywhere you see,
Soon a friendly, smiling face will bring your sweetened tea.
Put your elbows on the table, just relax and have some fun,
Eat your chicken with your fingers,
use a toothpick when you're done.
Enjoy a slab of country ham, greens and blackeyed peas,
Big old biscuits steaming hot - pass the gravy, please.
Mashed potatoes, deep fried squash satisfy my soul,
Whatever would I do without this local glory hole?
Some may dine at cafes fine on pheasant under glass,
With caviar and fancy wine, but as for me I'll pass.
I love my little down home place, no furbelows and fuss,
While some may lean to haute cruisine,
I'll just stick with Gus.
Just wanted to share this with the family.

They helped many greek families that move to our area get their start also. MY husband and son could not go to a hockey game without eating at your restaurant. They got to know everyone there. I lost my husband last Oct to brain cancer. I am so sorry for your loss. God does not forget the ones who are left behind to mourn. Frances Davis, Charlotte NC

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Gus. He was a very delightful man and cared very deeply for the many children and families that came into the restaraunt. He watched my daughter Mackenzie grow over the past 10 years and I still remember everytime we came to have lunch he would bring her mashed potatoes with milk. To this day Mackenzie would only eat his potatoes because she said that he made them special just for her. Thrace your dad will be missed by many people. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

To the Bacogeorge Family,
Although we only lived next to your family on Brookhurst for a year back in 1973-74, we have continued to watch the three children through articles and enjoying the family's restaurants uptown, on Westinghouse, as well as the Monroe Road location. We kinow that Gus will be lovingly remembered, not only by his customers and family, but the many he helped come to America and get started and succeed by giving them shelter, employment and assistance as they transitioned to productive and successful members of our community. May your family continue to be comforted by Our Father and his son Jesus Christ in this time of your loss of your father and husband. God bless you all.

I would drive by the Monroe Rd. place and it was always packed with Law enforcement and Fire and rescue and doctor folks. Barely room in the parking lot. Gus's even had vegetarians come in for Fresh My Farm Veggies when Vegetarian places were non existant at one point and would put up with the meat smells just to get good veggies. My Grandmother loved that place and you could eat lunch and dinner at 3pm no problem. Hope the tradition will continue. Thank you Gus
