Helen Newman Obituary

Helen Compton Newman passed away peacefully on June 8, 2018. Born on July 16, 1927 in Salisbury, NC, she was the only child of Sarah Helen Trexler and James Wesley Compton.

Educated in the city schools, Helen was a graduate of Boyden High School in Salisbury. She attended Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia. At the end of World War II, she transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her BA in 1948. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority.

Helen was married January 20, 1951 to Wallace Brown Newman of Charlotte. Surviving are their three children: daughter, Betsy Brabson (Bill) of Georgetown, SC; sons, Wallace Newman, Jr. (Jo) and Compie Newman (Catherine) of Charlotte and grandchildren Wylie and Tyler Brabson, Harrison and John Newman. She is also survived by dear cousins and friends. Helen's husband predeceased her on November 14, 2000, two months before they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of the Charlotte Junior League, Myers Park United Methodist Church and active in the community. Always interested in real estate, Helen obtained her license and was associated with H. Y. Dunaway Co. for 12 years. After several years at Percival, she established Helen Newman Realtors and completed a successful, 25-year career. Helen enjoyed her family and friends and appreciated all of the happiness and joy they brought to her life. Her ability to connect with people and establish deep relationships was a special quality. Helen particularly enjoyed Sunday afternoon tennis and many wonderful summer family vacations at the "3 G's" in Windy Hill Beach, SC.

A celebration of Helen's life will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, June 14 at Myers Park United Methodist Church. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 13 from 5 - 7 pm at the home of Catherine and Compie Newman - 3912 Silver Bell Drive.

The family will be forever grateful for the wonderful care provided by The Cypress and Stewart Health Center and the dedication and personal care provided by Karen Goins.

Memorials may be directed to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Box 6161, Charlotte, NC 28207; The Cypress of Charlotte Employee Appreciation Fund, 6920 Marching Duck Dr., Charlotte, NC 28210 or to the charity of one's choice.

I miss my Aunt Helen. A bright light. An independent spirit. An inspiring business woman. Always interested in what was new in my life -- and she made everyone feel special that way. Great sense of humor and style! Besides being "kin," she was a dear friend to my mother and to me. Deeply missed by many.

Helen brought a lot of joy to Myers Park UMC, and I always enjoyed fellowship with her when I would teach the Fellowship Sunday School Class and she would play the piano. May God's greatest comfort be with all the family during thses days.

I grew up in the Church with the Newman family. Mrs. Newman was a regal lovely person. She always spoke with me every time we would see each other at Church.. She was in fact my Vacation Bible School teacher. All my love to the Newman family.

Betsy, Compy and Bubbie,
I am sad to read about your Mom's passing. She was a great lady that I am happy to have known as I was growing up and over the years.
I regret I will be out of town and will not be able to see all of you at Compy's and at her funeral service. Please know I am thinking of all of you. I know it is comforting to know she will be at peace.
Blessings,
Gail Goforth
