Irene Spivey Obituary

Irene Miller Spivey CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Irene Spivey, 89, of Plantation Estates, was called home by the Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2014. Irene was born in Raleigh on Jan. 30, 1925, to William M. Miller, Sr. and Nina Belle Godwin Miller. Mrs. Spivey (also lovingly known as "Nana") was an adventurer who delighted in her family. She loved travel, dark chocolate, sharing family stories, playing bridge, the beach, but most of all being a grandmother. Irene was one of the original employees of First Union National Bank and she later taught kindergarten at Dilworth Methodist and Amity Presbyterian Church. She retired from BB&T as a teller supervisor. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, and attended business college at Queens College. A faithful servant of Christ, she was an elder at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church, where she and Creighton, a jazz musician, were married in 1956. She is currently a member of Matthews Presbyterian Church. A private entombment ceremony will be held at Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:30 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2014, in the auditorium of Plantation Estates, 733 Plantation Estates Drive, Matthews, NC 28105 with the Reverends Fred Thompson, Dr. Larry Watts, and Emily Owen officiating. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law David and Kim Spivey, daughter Sherry Lail, and her beloved grandchildren, for whom a visit to "Nanaland" was a true delight: Scott and Megan Lail, and Elizabeth, Burke and Maggie Spivey. She is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Teeny and Fred Thompson, and Rose and Don Fuller and by two sisters-in-law, Letitia Miller and Peggy Miller, as well as nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Creighton Spivey, her parents, her brothers Merle, Shirley and Bill Miller, and by her son-in-law Greg Lail. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be sent to Novant Presbyterian Hospice Care, 324 N. McDowell Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or to Matthews Presbyterian Church, 207 West John Street, Matthews, NC 28105. Irene's family is grateful to the staff of the Harris Hospice Unit at Novant-Presbyterian Medical Center for their expert and loving care. Arrangements are entrusted to Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203; online at www.hankinsandwhittington.com. "I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free. For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." "His master replied, "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness." Matthew 25:23.

To The Spivey Family - On several different occasions over the years, I had lunch with your Mother and Nancy Poplin at Fuddruckers. Irene was always so pleasant to talk with, content and full of life. I always admired her because she was such a neat dresser. She was proud of her family and truly loved all of you so much. God Bless Each Of You.

What a beautiful testimony for a fulfilled life on earth. I can't imagine a better transition into a promised afterlife than being surrounded by the ones you love. And being just before Easter and on Burke's birthday were part of a bigger plan. Sherry, you gave your mother a special gift with a trip that should be remembered as a very happy time! Treasure those memories, as I'm sure "Nana" loved her time on the road. You are all blessed to have had her for so many years and she was loved by a wonderful family. Kim B

I remember Mrs. Spivey fondly, as my kindergarten teacher at Amity Pres. Church. (in the late '60's) She was very sweet and kind. Heaven must be rejoicing. God bless the family.
