VALDESE -- Ms. Epley, age 94, died on February 27, 2005 at Valdese General Hospital after a short illness. She was a resident of College Pines Nursing Home at the time of her death and spent several years prior as an assisted-living resident of Charlotte Square in Charlotte.
She was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on November 5, 1910, the daughter of the late John Morgan and Tulle Marie Jensen Anderskow.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Louis P. Epley, Sr.; a brother Alexander Anton Morgan Anderskow; and a sister Alice Elizabeth Morgan Anderskow.
Surviving area son Louis Paul Epley, Jr. and wife Vicki of Charlotte; daughters Alyce E. Walker-Poriotis of Charlotte, Patricia E. Coan of Fuquay-Varina and Norma E. Annas and husband Ray of Rutherford College. Also surviving are her loving grandchildren: Marc Annas and wife Ann; David Epley and wife Tama, Michael Epley and wife Emily, Jamie Coan Gleaton and husband Jeff, Nathan Straus and wife Anna, and Brian Straus and wife Amy; and six great grandchildren.
During her long life, she worked in many areas, both in Charlotte and Burke County. Ms. Epley was known for giving unsurpassed love to mentally and physically challenged individuals. She spent many happy years as a Foster Grandparent at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center ans was once honored as Foster Grandparent of the year. In addition, she worked with severely challenged children at Saint Marks through the Jolly Sixties Club at Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte.
While living in Valdese, she served in in a leadership capacity at Bollinger Chapel Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School, leading special Bible studies, and participating in the activities of the women of the church. Her love for her God and her faith were special gifts that she left for her children and grandchildren. Her family will cherish their memories of her kind and fun loving spirit as well as love of life and song. Her indomitable spirit enriched each life she touched and brought joy to their life. To meet her...was to love her.
The family extends a special thank you to the College Pines and Valdese General Hospital staff for their loving and thoughtful care of 'Ms. Kitty'. The College Pines staff contributed so much to her joy and happiness the past 14 months that she lived there.
The Staff's kindnesses toward her and extra things done for her will always be remembered. The family also wished to thank Dr. Gowri Sathiraju for the Extraordinary medical care given and the compassion shown for our mother. Our mother was so fortunate to have had such excellent care and the family will always be grateful for everything that was done to enhance her quality of life.
A memorial service was held at Snow Hill Methodist Church in Morganton on Monday, February 28, 2005. Memorials may be made to Burke Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1721 Enon Rd., Valdese, NC 28690 or to the charity of one's choice.
