James Partington Obituary

James Partington III, of Charlotte, passed away Wednesday, November 22 at Mercy Hospital.

The son of James Partington, Jr. and Isabel Pickett Partington, Jim was born in New York City on September 8, 1943, and lived the first seven years of his life in Orange, New Jersey. After the family moved to Charlotte, he grew up in the Dilworth area. Jim was educated at Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, and N.C. State University. He spent many years as plant engineer at Exide Electronics in Raleigh, and later at Engineering Sales Co. in Charlotte.

Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara Proveaux Partington; his daughter, Kathryn (Kari) Proveaux Partington of Charlotte; son, James (Skip) Partington IV and wife, Stacey; and grandchildren, Seth, Sydney, and Silas Partington, all of Fayetteville.

Jim was a member of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church and a former board member of the Saint Peter's Hospital Foundation, Inc.

Jim enjoyed woodworking as well as stamp and coin collecting and was an accomplished cook, but one of his greatest loves was the Boy Scouts of America. He especially treasured letters from former Scouts thanking "Mr. P." for the guidance and for his positive influence and, in hindsight, for being such a stern taskmaster. Whether on an Appalachian Trail 50-miler, summer camp, or a monthly camping trip, eating the concoctions of boys trying for the umpteenth time to earn cooking merit badge, he was a steadfast mentor. He always enjoyed the laughter and camaraderie of fellow Scouters as well as the boys.

Jim was an Eagle Scout, as are his son and grandson and another grandson is a Life Scout on his way to Eagle. He served as Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster for several B.S.A. troops in Raleigh and Charlotte. He was Woodbadge-trained, a Chapter Advisor to the Order of the Arrow, and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and the National Scoutmaster Award.

The funeral service will be on Wednesday, November 29, at 11a.m., at Saint Peter's Episcopal Church, 115 W. Seventh St., in Charlotte. Memorials can be made to the Charlotte Humane Society, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte 28203; or the Augustine Literacy Project, 115 W. Seventh Street, Charlotte, 28202; or the Friends of the Charlotte Library, 310 N. Tryon, Charlotte, 28202.

I met Jim through my involvement as a Scout leader at the Pack, Troop and District levels. His devotion to Scouting and his positive, supportive presence made an important difference to the program, to his fellow Scouters, and to the young men involved in Scouting.

Sidney Sheldon said, "Try to leave the Earth a better place than when you arrived." Jim more than accomplished this! I --and we--are much better as a result of getting to know, and working with Jim.

May God bless you and hold you close.
