Jane Harb Obituary

Jane Saunders Harb February 6, 1941 -November 8, 2013 BOONE - Jane Saunders Harb, of Boone, NC, died Friday, November 8, 2013. She was born to the late Richard and Margaret Saunders, February 6, 1941, in Salem, VA. Jane graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1959, eventually earning a Doctorate in Education in Interior Design from Virginia Polytechnic University in 1980. Jane left a legacy of education at Appalachian State University as a professor of Interior Design, where she taught for twenty-six years. She was passionate about hands-on Interior Design education, having students re-design many parts of the Appalachian campus during the course of their studies. Janie grew up in Virginia, and always had a love for the country. She raised her two sons as a single parent, put herself through school and brought national prominence to the Interior Design program at Appalachian State University. She will be remembered by her inexorable love for her sons, her love for her students, her commitment to higher education, her fondness of the beach, and her dedication to good manners. Jane is survived by two children: Trey Harb (wife Sara) of Charlotte, NC, and Jonathan Harb of San Rafael, CA. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Miles and Meredith Harb; two brothers and one sister: Richard Hyde Saunders, Jr. (wife Linda); Robert William Saunders (wife Sandi) and Margaret Anne McKinney (husband Garland B. (Max)); and many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Virginia. A viewing will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 12 at John M. Oakey Funeral Home in Salem, VA. Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 13 at East Hills Cemetery, with the funeral following at 11 a.m. at Salem Presbyterian Church in Salem. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 15 at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock, NC, with a gathering of friends and family at the Best Cellar (Ragged Garden Inn) just after. In lieu of flowers, Jane requested donations be made to Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc. to the Jane S. Harb Interior Design Scholarship mailed to P.O. Box 32014 Boone, NC 28608. Please also note that the gift is in memory of Dr. Jane Harb. An online guestbook is available by visiting www.johnmoakey.com. John M. I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since she passed away. Her gifts to this world are her sons, in whom I I know she’s looking down on from above, saying, “So proud of you!” Sweet memories of this dear lady...❤

Jonathan, Trey, Harb family,

My family and I are so sorry to hear about your loss.

I have many fond memories of spending time with Jonathan, Trey, and Jane as we kids grew up in Boone. Jane's love for you all and encouragement of our hobbies (which often took over major parts of the house) was evident. I particularly remember her wonderful blackberry cobbler as well as many meals she prepared for us as ravenous teenagers while reminding us to use proper table manners.

I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to have known her, but we will all miss her. Our family will be thinking about all of you in this difficult time.

Best Regards,
Brett, Debbie, and Simone

Dr. Harb was a professor of mine, my favorite actually. She was a kind, sweet woman who truly cared for her students. I remember one night she had us over for dinner. I am sure she did that with every graduating class. She even helped me with job leads years after graduating. A great woman, so sorry for your loss.

Jonathon, Trey, Richard, Bobby, Margaret Ann and Janie's Extended Family,

My deepest sympathies to you. I have such fond memories of Janie up on the mountain and all the holidays we shared. I remember the Christmas when she gave Uncle Dick the painting of the Irish Setters. I can still see her coming down the stairs in her Christmas outfit. She reminded me of the beautiful Christmas Barbie doll. Janie was so soft spoken and the very embodiment of a true southern lady. Yet Janie had a resolve to be the very best she could be and be a major contributor to benefit society. She was very proud to be a Mother and grandmother and did her very best to raise her sons to be the best they could be. She was there for me when I was going though my custody battle and offered me invaluable wisdom and words of advice. Janie was my cousin but also a friend. My biggest regret is that we all went our separate ways and lost touch with each other though the years.

Richard, Bobby and Margaret Ann,
I know you will miss your sister but when you do think of all the fun times you shared; living on the mountain, stopping by Grandma Cecil's for lunches, all the holidays, all the animals, your Mother and Father. And know they are all rejoying in Heaven and welcoming Janie with open arms. And I'm sure Janie is there trying to redesign the color scheme...lol. Seriously Janie is there in heaven looking down on you and sending all the love she can back to you.

Trey and Jonathan,
I know how much you will miss your Mother and all the wonderful memories you shared. You will look towards the heavens and see her there. You will see her in the flowers and you will feel her wrap her arms around you and hear her say "I will love you always".

Your Mother and Sister has not left you and never will; she just went to Heaven.

My love, prayers and deepest sympathies to you all.

Carolyn

Jane was a treasured friend whose long- distant phone calls and occasional lunches in Boone leave me with fondest memories of her. Jane was a joy to know and I admired her in so many way. I will miss her greatly. To Trey and Jonathan, she spoke of you every time I talked to her and loved you with all her heart. She also spoke lovingly of her brothers and their families. To each of you, my deepest condolence in the loss of a very special person in your lives. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
