Jimmie Perkins Obituary

Automotive industry icon J.C. "Jim" Perkins passed away on Dec. 28, 2018, in Charlotte, North Carolina, at the age of 83.

Born in Waco, Texas, on March 7, 1935, Jim proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1953-1957 before attending his hometown Baylor University. His legendary career in the car business began in Dallas in 1960 as a materials return clerk, which at the time was the lowest entry level position within Chevrolet Motor Division.

Jim quickly established himself as a "leader's leader," rising through the ranks and holding a variety of management roles at Chevrolet, Buick and Toyota. Regarded as an innovative and dynamic executive, his achievements included a significant revitalization of Chevrolet in the early 1990s and the successful launch of the Lexus brand for Toyota.

Jim's extraordinary leadership capabilities were exemplified in his management of Chevrolet Motor Division, the largest car division at the largest car company in the world. As general manager from 1989-1996, he reinvigorated Chevy's products with 16 new vehicle lines and restored its prominence in the industry with increased sales and vastly improved customer and dealer relations. One of his signature achievements was saving Chevrolet's flagship model, the storied Corvette, for which he was honored in 1999 with induction into the Corvette Hall of Fame.

As head of Chevrolet, Jim also oversaw GM Racing, which delivered five NASCAR manufacturer championships and dominated all classes of open-wheel motor sports during his seven-year tenure. He drove the pace car for the prestigious Indianapolis 500 on three occasions: 1990, 1993 and 1995.

Following his retirement from Chevrolet, Jim was named president and CEO of Charlotte-based Hendrick Automotive Group in 1997. He was responsible for the direction and growth of one of the largest automotive retailers in the United States until 2005 when he became the first president and COO of The Hendrick Cos.

Jim was a three-time recipient of the Automotive News Automotive All-Star Award and served on a variety of boards, including for Bass Pro Shops, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeastern Michigan, and Axxess Technologies.

For all his professional achievements, Jim is remembered by his closest friends and family as a loving and devoted husband, an incredible father and grandfather, and a gentleman of deep faith. Married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 51 years, he was humble, kind and compassionate. At the same time, he was the embodiment of the strength, courage and confidence indicative of his Texas roots.

A true auto enthusiast and preservationist, Jim was a collector of muscle cars - all Chevrolet - and car memorabilia. He was an avid fresh water fisherman and especially cherished spending time with his family and friends. A Texan through and through, he maintained a residence in Arlington until his death.

Jim is survived by his children, Steve Perkins (Tammy), Penni Watkins (Kenny) and Patrick Perkins (Mary); his grandchildren, Amber Ramsey, Justin Perkins, Paryse Watkins and Julia Perkins; and his great grandchildren, Ethan Ramsey, Kellen Ramsey, Jackson Ramsey, Judah Perkins and Ellie Perkins. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Barbara; his sister, Edna Dell; and his parents, Proctor and Carrie Perkins.

On Thursday, Jan. 3, the family will receive visitors from 12:30-3:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3:30 p.m. at Central Church of God, 5301 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270. A private burial will be held in Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Jim's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).

I met Jim briefly at Martinsville Speedway in the spring of 2012. I was a firefighter on pit road that day in Jeff Gordon´s pit. Jim struck up a conversation with me and I told him how I was in a dream scenario that day. I had been a fan of Jeff´s since I was 3 years old. Jim handed me a business card, asked me to write my info on the back, and told me he would send me something. About a week later I received autographed merch from Jeff. I didn´t know Jim like most people here, but the short conversation with him impacted me greatly. I have never forgotten that day, and I think of it often when I look up on my wall where the items are displayed. After searching his name, I came across this memorial and am saddened to see he has passed on. With how big of an impact his small act of kindness had on me, I can only imagine the void left behind in his family that can not be filled. God bless your family Jim, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you for what you did for me.

I'm very sorry to hear of Jim's passing. We were good friends during our days at Waco High School. The obituary mentioned that his car collection was all Chevrolet but in the High School days he had a 1936 Ford.

Jim was one of the finest men I have ever known. He went out of his way several times to help me when I was in Kilgore with my father in our Chevrolet store . He also helped me in several ways once I moved to Temple Texas to become the Chevrolet dealer . He was never to busy to take my calls or to visit . When my father passed in 2006 Jim sent me a very kind note and that touched me greatly . He believed we worked together as a team and Chevrolet did wonderful under his leadership . God Bless this man and his family .

So sorry to hear of Jimmie's passing. It came as a shock to me after just having a long and as usual lively conversation about all things including family. He greeted me as always with "What's up Moccasin". I have so many fond memories of him, his mother and father and the kindness and love they showed me. I admired him greatly and always told him if I was ever reincarnated, I wanted to come back as Jim Perkins. He lived a full and rewarding life and made a great impression on everyone he came in contact with. Rest in peace dear Cousin. I will miss you.

We lived across from Jim in the Wrenfield community. I always loved talking to Jim at the mailbox at the end of the work day. He was kind, interested in how my workday went, witty, and generous with his smile. He often spoke of his family, for whom he had such pride and devotion. And he shared stories of his past. One time he told me that when he was very young he had nothing. I mean NOTHING. So if he wanted something he had to figure out a way to work for it. He rather humbly explained, When I was eight years old I received my first weekly pay. It came in a little envelope with some coins in it. I was so proud to get that envelope. And you know, today I am eighty, and there has never been a week since that day, that I have not received a paycheck. How fortunate for his family and for all of the people whose lives he touched in the auto industry to witness Jim's tremendous work ethic! The Wrenfield community will miss him.
